What is a cash advance?

Withdrawing cash using your credit card is called a cash advance. Most credit cards allow you to withdraw money from a credit card up to a certain limit, like you would with a debit card, however the fees and interest rates on these are extremely high.

Which transactions are considered a cash advance?

It's important to know that withdrawing money from an ATM with a credit card isn't the only type of transaction that is consider a cash advance. If you do any of the following on your credit card, the may also be considered as cash advances by your credit card provider:

  • Paying your mortgage or utility bills
  • Buying travel money
  • Buying gift vouchers
  • Gambling transactions
  • Writing cheques from your credit card (only offered by some providers)

Should you take out cash with your credit card?

Generally, you should avoid withdrawing cash with a credit card. However, in emergency situations, using a credit card may be your only option. If this is the case, it’s important to understand how much it will cost you.

Does withdrawing cash from a credit card affect your credit score?

Yes, withdrawing cash on your credit will leave a mark on your credit file and can therefore impact your credit score. This is because a cash advance acts is a signal to banks and lenders that you don't have enough cash in your bank account to withdraw the money you need.

How much does a cash advance credit card cost?

Cash advances generally have higher interest rates than purchases with a credit card.

If you withdraw money, you will have to pay:

Cash advance fees

These can vary from nothing to around 5% and some also have  a minimum charge - usually around £3.

Cash withdraw rate

You will start owing interest from the day you take the cash out, usually at a higher rate than your normal APR.

Interest

In addition to cash withdrawal interest, you will also pay interest on any purchases you make using your credit card, unless you pay off the balance in full each month.

It’s also worth noting that if you use your credit card to withdraw cash when travelling, there could be added fees for doing so, such as a dynamic currency conversion (DCC) fee, which is typically higher than your credit provider’s currency conversion fee.

Here is a closer look at how much they cost and how to keep your costs down.

In most cases, it's best to avoid withdrawing cash from your credit card. But if you've got an emergency and need quick cash, it is a useful facility to have. Just be sure to pay it off as soon you can, otherwise you'll be charged daily interest.

Find the best cash withdrawal credit card for you

If you think you will need to withdraw cash on a credit card, choose one that will be as cheap as possible.

The above table includes credit cards available in the UK and shows the cash withdrawal fee and interest rate for each one. You can sort the results to show the cheapest fees or interest rates.

The comparison also shows the maximum amount you can withdraw and the card's APR.

You can also keep your costs down by withdrawing all the money you need in one go and paying off your balance straight away.

How else can you get the cash you need?

If you need a large amount of cash it could be cheaper to use a money transfer credit card. These let you send money from the card to your bank account, which you could then withdraw.

They charge a fee, but some come without interest for several months. This guide explains how much money transfer cards cost.

Alternatively, a personal loan could be another option. Depending on the amount of money you need to borrow and how long you need to pay it back, a loan could be a cheaper alternative to a cash advance credit card.

However, these are usually time consuming options and may not be right for you if you need quick access to cash.

Can I withdraw cash abroad?

Withdrawing cash on your credit card abroad comes with the same cash advance and interest fees as when you take cash out at home, but you will also be charged a foreign transaction fee.

Foreign transaction fees are usually charged as a percentage of the amount withdrawn and can vary considerably, so it’s worth reading up on how your credit card provider will charge you.

If you withdraw your cash in Sterling rather than the local currency, you’ll also face a dynamic currency conversion (DCC) fee, which is usually more expensive than your credit card provider’s currency conversion fee.
