Lenders look at far more than just your credit score. Find out five key things they check when you apply for a business loan, and how to prepare.
Knowing what lenders look for can help you prepare a strong business loan application.
When you apply, lenders assess the full picture of your business to decide whether you’re eligible for the funding and understanding what they care about can make the difference between approval and rejection.
To help you prepare, here are five key things lenders look for when they review business loan applications.
1. Your financial track record
Lenders want to see financial stability when deciding whether to approve your business application. They’ll look into your profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow forecasts to see if the numbers add up.
Lenders want consistency and accuracy from applicants, so make sure your financial records are clean, current, and easy to follow. If your accounts are not up to date, it’s time to tidy them up.
2. Business banking
Lenders want to get a clear picture of your business finances, and they will look at how money flows in and out, whether you’re consistently overdrawn, and whether your income is predictable or not.
This means mixing business and personal finances can be a problem. A dedicated business account not only looks more professional, but it also makes it easier for lenders to see what’s actually going on. Keep your accounts clean, maintain a healthy balance and avoid unnecessary overdrafts.
3. Both of your credit scores
Most lenders will check both your business credit score and your personal one. Missed payments, CCJs, or an adverse credit history can raise doubts about whether you’ll pay them back.
There are plenty of ways to boost your credit score. You can do this by paying bills on time, chipping away at existing debt, and avoiding applying for credit you don’t need. Check your score regularly through free services like Experian, so there are no unwelcome surprises.
4. Why your business needs the loan
Lenders want to know exactly what you’re planning to do with a business loan, and whether your plan makes sense.
This means being specific, so break down how much you need, what you’ll spend it on (equipment, hiring, marketing, stock), and what impact you anticipate it having. A clear, well-thought-out plan could improve your chances of approval.
5. Whether you can afford to repay it
Lenders will calculate your debt service coverage ratio (DSCR) to see whether your income can comfortably cover loan repayments plus your existing debts.
Most lenders look for a DSCR of at least 1.25, meaning your income is 25% higher than your debt repayments. If you’re below that, you could improve your chances by boosting profitability or clearing some existing debts before you apply
