First Direct - Mortgage

This runs like clockwork, as anyone who has experience of First Direct would come to expect. I have been fortunate to have a rate tied to Bank of England base rate (that plus 1%) and manage to pay over the odds each month to eat into the capital. I doubt that a new customer could get such a good rate but they always have something competitive on offer.

Confidence, trust, professionalism.

Offset Mortgage

At the time of getting my mortgage, First Direct offered the cheapest mortgage rates and permitted offsetting. I always get to speak to a UK call centre. Which understands my issue. The only thing to look out for is the fees including the closure fee but even if you keep the account with a zero balance then you won't have to pay

Good customer service, lacking in online features

First Directs customer service is likely second to none, the call centre staff are great. There is however little ability to check balance online of mortgage and information on the telephone can be sketchy. Their rates are pretty average I believe but a good general all rounder. When trying to add an additional person onto the mortgage we did have to wait for a lot of paperwork, but I think that is the way when trying to make changes to a mortgage account.

Using a First Direct mortgage

I was able to decide the length of my mortgage and the amount of repayment that I wanted to make. I chose an offset mortgage which meant that the interest accrued by my nominated accounts are offset against the interest due on the mortgage. I am provided with an annual statement of payments made and length of time left for the term of the mortgage. I also receive regular updates to tell me how much longer the mortgage account has to run. I have bee in the fortunate position whereby my nominated accounts have funds exceeding those outstanding in the mortgage. I have therefore not had to pay any additional interest. The account is available up to the agreed loan amount so I could have availed myself of a payment break or even borrowed money against the account so long as I repaid the full amount by the end of the term.

First Direct - Loosers of important documentation

Poor customer service as they seem to not be able to manage the post and receipt of important critical documents.

The mortgage departure is suitably detached from the rest of the customer service and positively focused. I cant tell you how much extra stress and needless back and forth that generated. Without any apology or clear and necessary explanation of what to do and the implication that would affect me.

Lastly, they took the opportunity to change my mortgage from being from fully portable for the lifetime of the term, less than 10 years, to make it non-portable without any explanation at all. Just rude and not fair in the terms of the original mortagage - I was reducing the outstanding ammount and LTV. Just wrong

It's backed by HSBC, right rate
