Vodafone international roaming FAQs

Vodafone is one of the biggest UK mobile networks. With a premium selection of phones and more affordable phones to meet every budget, Vodafone also boasts some great customer perks, but where it really shines is its roaming options. Vodafone is an international brand, with a presence in over 20 countries. That means it has a wide reach when it comes to covering your phone usage outside of the UK. Here’s all you need to know about Vodafone roaming, including what it means in terms of roaming now that the UK has left the EU.

Does Brexit affect Vodafone roaming charges?

Currently, no. Although the official government line is as follows: “The UK has now left the EU. This means that surcharge-free roaming when you travel to EU and EEA countries is no longer guaranteed. This includes employees of UK companies travelling in the EU for business.”

However, there have been assurances by mobile operators that customers can continue roaming at no extra cost. This may change but networks have so far kept their roaming stipulations the same.

The good news is that there are post-Brexit roaming guidelines that have been put in place. These include a £45-a-month limit on customers who use data abroad (Vodafone has a system that is under this limit). After this limit is reached, they will have to opt-in to further use. The government has also legislated to continue to ensure that consumers receive alerts when they are at 80% and 100% data usage.

What is covered by Vodafone global roaming?

Vodafone roaming allows you to use your phone just as you would at home. All Vodafone plans are covered for the 51 Roam-free countries, the rest come at a £6 charge. With this roaming coverage, you can:

  • Call UK numbers at no extra cost to your monthly allowance/UK standard rates

  • Call local numbers at no extra cost to your monthly allowance/UK standard rates

  • Use your data as you would at home, without caps or speed restrictions

Are there data caps on Vodafone roaming?

Yes, but only on your out-of-plan data. That means if you use more data than is covered by your data allowance, you will be prevented from racking up charges of more than £39.33, which is a handy way to stop you coming home to a huge bill.

Can I use 5G with Vodafone global roaming?

Yes, Vodafone supports the use of 5G in several major cities and towns in the following countries (47 European towns and cities are part of this) including:

  • Spain (including Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga)

  • Germany (including Munich, Hamburg, Berlin)

  • Italy (including Rome, Naples, Milan)

You will, of course, need a 5G-enabled phone. It’s worth noting that the iPhone 12 doesn’t currently support 5G roaming. Vodafone expects 5G roaming to come to iPhone 12 sometime this year (2021).

I’m a pay as you go customer, can I get Vodafone global roaming?

Yes, all Vodafone customers can make use of the basic 51 countries in the Roam-free area, including customers who are:

  • Using a pay as you go bundle

  • Using pay as you go with basic top-ups

  • On a pay-monthly contract

  • On a data-only SIM

How do I set up Vodafone Mobile roaming?

You don’t have to do anything special to set up roaming on your phone. You’ll receive a text when you arrive in your destination to let you know if you’re covered and, if not, what the local charges are.

My Vodafone data roaming isn’t working - what do I do?

The problem may be in your phone’s device settings.

For Android phones:

  • Go to Settings

  • Go to Connections

  • Go to Mobile Networks

  • Go to Data Roaming and toggle it on

For iPhones:

  • Go to Settings

  • Go to Mobile Data Options

  • Toggle Data Roaming on

Does my Vodafone roaming apply to my tablet or laptop?

Yes, Vodafone’s data-only SIM cards allow for roaming at up to 81 destinations, with all SIMs being covered for the Vodafone 51 Roam-free destinations and those purchased with an Unlimited Max plan covering the 81 Roam-further destinations. That means you can use your laptop, tablet and other data SIM devices free of charge, just like your phone.

Is there a fair use policy on Vodafone roaming?

Yes, though this is designed to prevent people who aren’t living in the UK from abusing it, not to restrict your enjoyment while you’re travelling. If you use roaming for a continuous four months, or if over 50% of your total time with Vodafone is spent roaming, your services may be suspended. This is still a very generous allowance, all things considered.
