Compare another type of current account

What is an online current account?

An online current account is a bank account designed for day-to-day transactions that you manage remotely via the bank's website or app. Online banking is now offered by most high street banks, but you can also get the same facilities from banks without physical branches. These are known as app-based bank accounts or digital-only bank accounts. All your bank transactions are carried out using the internet, via a smartphone app or website.

How to open a current account online

If you want to open a bank account online, it's simple and takes just a few minutes.

  • Visit the website of the bank of your choice and fill out the application form for the type of account you want.

  • Provide your personal details, such as your name, age, nationality and address, as well as supporting proof of ID.

What supporting documents are required to open an online bank account?

Supporting documents that are typically accepted include:

Proof of ID documents:
  • Driving licence (UK/EU/EAA)

  • UK passport, foreign passport & visa

  • EU and EEA national identity card

Proof of address documents:
  • Driving licence

  • UK utility bill (gas, electricity, water or home telephone)

  • Mortgage/rental agreements

  • Bank/building society statement

  • Council tax bill

Some online banks may also ask for additional details, such as your occupation, income and expenses. Though this is not legally required, many banks often use this information to provide you with offers about other products and services in the future, such as credit cards or savings accounts.

How to choose the best online bank account

When comparing online bank accounts look out for the following features:

Monthly fees

Some banks may charge a monthly fee, so you need to take this into account when calculating the cost of the services they provide.

Overdraft facilities

If you think that your balance may drop below zero, you may wish to review the overdraft facilities on offer and the charges for using them.

Earning on your balance

Some banks pay you interest on your balance up to a certain threshold amount. This may be a sweetener that makes you choose one account over another.

Additional features

Budgeting and savings tools that help you manage your finances better are increasingly popular, but you may get other features too.

Add-ons

Some packaged accounts have added bonuses, such as mobile phone insurance or breakdown cover. You should think about whether these would be useful for you.

Rewards

Some accounts offer rewards on your spending, such as cashback or discounts when you shop with certain retailers. Evaluate whether these are of value to you.

You can find out more about what you need from your bank account here. Once you have found accounts that offer these features, check what their internet banking service includes.

What are the benefits of app-based bank accounts?

These accounts also offer several unique features such as:

  • Spending notifications

  • Ring fencing savings

  • Free cash withdrawals overseas

  • Budgeting tools

  • Rewards/add-ons
