You will also need to provide your personal details, and the details of any other employees you want to issue with a card. You may need to confirm your:

  • Full name

  • Mother's maiden name

  • Three years of previous addresses

  • Contact details

Make sure you have all the details you need before you start your application. Here is everything you need to know about how to apply for a credit card.

Who can apply for a card?

You can apply for a business credit card if you:

  • Run your own business

  • Are a director of a company

  • Are in charge of a company's finances

You will also need to:

  • Be over 18 years old

  • Be a UK resident

  • Apply for a UK registered business

  • Turnover a certain amount

How much your business will need to turn over may differ depending on the provider, so check the terms and conditions before you apply.

Many providers will only offer you a business credit card if you hold a business current account with them already.

Will you be accepted?

The provider will base their decision on:

  • How much money your company makes

  • Your business's credit history

  • Your personal credit history if you're a sole trader

This will tell them if your business can afford to repay the credit card balance, and how your business has managed credit in the past.

What if you're rejected?

If your application for a business credit card is unsuccessful, do not apply again straight away as this could damage your business's credit record.

Applying several times can make you appear desperate to borrow, which can put lenders off offering you credit.

Find out why your application was rejected and take steps to rectify the issue before you apply again. You could do this by asking the lender, or checking your credit report.
