Caravan insurance is a way to protect your caravan and its contents. You can protect it against accidental damage, vandalism and theft.
Every policy comes with different features, so think about the best way to protect your caravan, compare quotes and read reviews before you go ahead.
Before you can find the best caravan insurance for your needs, you need to work out what type of policy you require. This depends on the kind of caravan you own.
There are three types of policy:
Touring caravan insurance
This covers caravans that you tow behind your car. Your car insurance may include caravan cover, but it will only offer a basic level of protection. For example, if you’re at fault in a road traffic accident, it’s unlikely that your car insurance would cover damage to your caravan
Static caravan insurance
This covers caravans that are kept at a fixed location, such as a holiday park
Motorhome insurance
This covers any caravan you can drive, such as a motorhome or campervan. This insurance is a legal requirement because these vehicles can be driven and are therefore subject to the Road Traffic Act.
Once you know which type of insurance you need, think about what cover you want.
Most caravan insurance policies cover:
internal accidental damage (such as a water leak)
external accidental damage (if your caravan is damaged by a car while parked for example)
malicious damage (vandalism)
third-party liability (if you injure a member of the public or cause damage to somebody else’s property)
theft
the contents of your caravan
Some policies offer new-for-old cover. This means your caravan or contents will be replaced with new, equivalent models if they’re destroyed or stolen. This is more expensive, and you might not be eligible if your caravan is too old or has done too many miles.
Other policies offer market value cover. This means that if your caravan is stolen or damaged beyond economic repair, your insurance provider pays out its current value. This is cheaper than new-for-old cover and it might be the only type of insurance you can get for an older caravan. The downside is that even if your caravan was new when you bought it, if it is written off, you only get enough money to buy a second-hand one.
Unfortunately, yes. For example, you might not be covered for:
wear and tear
damage or theft as a result of poor security
damage caused because the caravan is used as a permanent residence
damage caused by vermin or insect infestation
You can add optional extras to your policy, including:
breakdown cover
European cover
friends and family cover – so they can use your caravan
You could get cheaper caravan insurance by:
keeping your caravan at a registered Caravan Storage Site Owners’ Association (CaSSOA) site – CaSSOA works towards minimising caravan theft by promoting high levels of security
installing extra security, such as alarms, locks and tracking devices
joining a caravan club, such as the Camping and Caravanning Club
only paying for the extras you really need
The best way to get cheaper caravan insurance is to compare quotes from as many insurers as possible.
That said, finding cheap insurance should never be your only goal. It’s more important to find a policy that meets your needs, gives you enough cover and that has good reviews.
With a little research you should be able to find online reviews for the caravan insurance policy or provider you’re looking at. A good place to start is Defaqto. Its experts rate insurance products, depending on how comprehensive a policy is. You could then look on Trustpilot and Feefo, where customers share their experiences and give reviews and ratings.
Generally, insurers want to know:
your name and address
details about the caravan – make, model, number of registrations, size and usage
where your caravan is kept
what security measures are in place
details about the cover you want
information about previous caravan insurance claims
