TalkTalk offers basic ADSL connections through the Openreach network, as well as fibre-optic broadband and a SOGEA service which removes any need to have a landline. There are five connection speeds available, while every package comes with a free router and HomeSafe online security. This blocks harmful websites, provides virus alerts, and allows parents to restrict access to unsuitable websites.
Known as Fast Broadband, TalkTalk’s entry-level option uses standard ADSL broadband with an average speed of 11Mbps. It’s ideal for web browsing and social networking, but it can struggle when more than a handful of smart devices are connected to the router.
The Fibre 35 provides an average download speed of 38Mbps. This is suitable for larger households, and should comfortably accommodate an array of smart speakers and wireless home tech.
Designed for busier households, TalkTalk’s Fibre 65 service delivers an average speed of 67Mbps, with sufficient bandwidth to support multiple devices at once.
Offering average download speeds of 145Mbps, and available with or without an accompanying landline, the recently added Fibre 150 service capitalises on improving home broadband connections. There’s also a new Fibre 250 package which doubles these already-impressive download speeds, though Fibre 250 is still being rolled out at the time of writing (January 2021).
Apart from the Fibre 150 Data Only package, every TalkTalk broadband deal includes phone line rental, but phone calls aren’t automatically included. though calls aren’t automatically included. If you use your landline regularly, TalkTalk offers two inclusive call packages:
Anytime calling: An inclusive calling package with free calls to UK landlines or mobile numbers 24 hours a day, seven days a week
International calling: Provides 1,000 mobile and landline minutes to 50 countries
TalkTalk TV bundles let you pick and choose specific add-ons. There are over 80 live channels available, including Sky Sports and Sky Cinema packages. These can be added onto your regular TV service on a month-to-month basis, without a long-term subscription. Customers are provided with a set-top box to pause or record live TV, and this can also access streaming services including Netflix, iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video and NOW TV.
All TalkTalk packages come with unlimited downloads, so you won’t be slowed down by usage caps. However, location and household habits will affect achievable broadband speeds, so it’s a good idea to find out which of the following connection speeds is attainable in your area:

TalkTalk’s Super Router is quite basic but does the job for smaller households, with four gigabit Ethernet ports and dual band Wi-Fi. However, larger households might need a more advanced router (or have to invest in a Wi-Fi extender to ensure reliable service throughout the home), which is something to consider when signing up for ADSL broadband.
TalkTalk’s latest Wi-Fi Hub is shipped out to fibre optic broadband customers. It’s also dual band but includes multiple antennae to deliver a better wireless connection throughout the home.
Broadband installation is quick and easy, and your Super Router or Wi-Fi Hub will be sent directly to your home via Royal Mail within two weeks. This is all you’ll need if a phone line is installed. For those who don’t have a landline, an engineer will come out on an appointed day and effect an installation.
TalkTalk was awarded the title of Most Popular Broadband Provider at the 2019 Uswitch Broadband and Mobile Awards. According to the most recent Ofcom customer satisfaction survey, its strong points include average call waiting times of just 33 seconds. Perhaps surprisingly, only 79 percent of customers reported being generally satisfied with their service, which is below the industry average. TalkTalk broadband customers also were less likely than average to recommend this internet service provider (ISP) to a friend.
On TrustPilot, TalkTalk has an average overall score of 2.7 out of five, with 35 percent of its reviews achieving five stars and 41 percent awarding the company a single star. Positive TalkTalk broadband reviews mention helpful customer service agents, a useful portal for account management and an easy sign-up process. Negative reviews paint the opposite picture of customer service, which suggests some agents are more helpful than others.

When reading TalkTalk reviews, value for money is clearly one of this ISP’s key selling points. It offers competitive pricing, free security bundles and a fixed price guarantee throughout contract periods. For basic home broadband, this makes TalkTalk an attractive proposition. Line rental is included with all packages (apart from the broadband-only Fibre 150 package which doesn’t require a landline), and customers enjoy truly unlimited downloads.
With a range of connection speeds to choose from, TalkTalk should meet every household’s data needs, though of course faster speeds mean higher prices. This is also true of the company’s flexible TV packages, with customers able to purchase 30-day TV boosts to add or remove channels without long-term commitment.
