Non existent communication

They sold an investment without authority even when another department had already confirmed (in writing) that they wouldn't.

On four separate attempts to get an answer over a 6 week period I have been met with deafening silence. I've had no choice but to refer this matter to the Financial Ombudsman.

In short, this business is okay all the time everything goes according to plan, but if they make a mistake or there is a problem that needs sorting out - they don't want to know.

Treat them with extreme caution!

TD Waterhouse blocked my account with their insane security practises

TD Waterhouse has adopted such a ridiculous level of security that it is becoming unusable.

We have been blocked from one of our accounts for months because they refuse to reactivate it despite several hour long calls, one of which they hung up in the middle of because they doubted my wife's identity.

We have 3 accounts as a family.

They're not the cheapest but I have come to trust them

TD Direct Investing acquired the share dealing business of the company I was with previously so I ended up with them by default.

They are not the cheapest but their website is very good and offers quite a lot of useful research information. The website is also very reliable and quick. On the few occasions when I have contacted them with queries and they have been very responsive and have a UK based call centre, so you get to speak to someone with a good knowledge of English, unlike some other organisations.

Even though they are not the cheapest I'm reluctant to change because of the good service they've provided over the years. They all provide a very extensive range of funds which can be held in an ISA.

However, it may be worth considering a cheaper provider if you trade a lot.

My experience buying shares using TD Direct Investing

I have used this company twice to buy shares in major companies. It was an easy and quick process and the account screens are easy to use once you have explored the ones available.

I can track the history of my purchases and their current values easily and see the returns and the charges applied by TD. On occasion I have needed proof of my share ownership to send to a third party and TD customer services have provided this quickly, passing it on directly to the third party, as requested.

TD Direct share dealing

This is new to me as it has just taken over the RBS share dealing site. The layout is identical and so the transfer has been seamless. All the relevant information has been transferred correctly so I am hoping that it will work just as well.

I have not had any activity on the account yet so I do not know what the service will be like or what the charges are - I should really check their terms and conditions.

Seamless changeover from RBS
