Handy service with some issues

Pre pay your currency for when you are abroad and withdraw at an ATM while you are there. Straightforward enough and useful.

But, the transferring of money to an account seems very slow and somewhat complicated in this age of internet banking. I was also unhappy to be charged for a replacement card when mine got stuck in a Spanish ATM - surely I shouldn't be penalised for something that is obviously beyond my control.

Great for travel or at home

I have one of these cards for travel to the USA. It is also brilliant for buying things online in the USA. They offer a really good currency conversion rate - much higher than on the high street or at the airport.

You can get the cards in a choice of currencies - Euros, US dollars or GBPs depending on where you want to use them. There are some charges applied to using some of the cards such as if you use the £ one in the UK there is a charge but if you use the others overseas there is no charge for normal transactions. There is a small charge to use ATMs to get cash out but this is more than covered by the beneficial exchange rate that is given when you top up the card.

You top up the card from your bank account which is fairly easy once you have set them up on your online banking.

I used them to get another card for my son when he was travelling in Europe. You can also get friends and family cards in the same currency as your main card - there is a charge for this.

Don't move house - otherwise does what it says on the tin.

My only problem I've had in the last 4 years is I've had and used this card when I moved house.

Updating your address on the website didn't actually change the address on their system and they sent my replacement card to my old address.

Luckily I had mail redirect but when I complained they told me it was my fault for not contacting them, even though the website showed the updated address, confused!

Other than this, the card does exactly what you expect, you load it up with GBP and then spend it as and when you like with no risk of places getting access to your main current account or carrying lots of cash.

FairFX Prepaid Cards

I have had my FairFX card for a number of years now. I have a Euro card with a spare one in case its stolen or lost and then I can contact FairFX to get the balance transferred. I also have a dollar one for when I went to the USA 2 years ago. I have kept it in case I want to go there again in the future.

It's easy to top up the cards, I can do it online as I've set up my bank account to feed it if necessary. I've used it several times in Europe on holiday, it's so easy and the rate they give is very competitive. There is then no charge for obtaining currency when on holiday, and if the card is lost you don't lose your money. It's so easy to check online what your balance is and you can top it up even when abroad by logging into the FairFX site with your pin no, and transfer money onto it from your bank account.

The cards only cost around £10, so it's a very useful way of carrying money with you safely, but you do need to remember your pin number.

Very good for foreign travel, much safer than cash

We use ours when we travel in the USA. It can be used like a normal debit card in Shops and Supermarkets. Because it is already loaded in dollars, there is no problem with knowing how much things will cost after conversion in a UK bank.

Also, their rates are very fair so you get a good rate of exchange. You can also use it in cash machines for ready cash. Highly recommended.

Use like ready cash.
