Yorkshire Building Society mortgage - flexible and excellent

I've been with YBS since we bought our first home 14 years ago and they've been brilliant, regularly reviewing their products and offering alternatives to avoid the need to move to another provider for a better deal. Love the flexibility of being able to over- and under-pay, and currently enjoying six months special leave from work enabled by that very facility.

The Yorkshire really is a building society

I am a great believer in genuine mutuals, but that would only weigh for so much if value for money was not a feature of the service. But with the Yorkshire, I have had a good interest rate, plus competitive renewals, plus a sensible decent sort of call centre if and when I needed such a thing. Thumbs up, i would say. I am quite happy to recommend, and will undoubtedly keep them at the top of the queue when and if I ever have any further need for mortgage services. Which I hope I won't!

Better offers out there

The time taken to sell and then find a house which I could transfer the existing YBS mortgage over to exceeded the 6 month YBS time frame they said i could have and they insisted on charging me the penalty fees of over 5K, I shall be changing mortgages come the end of the fixed deal I am on. As although I wanted to stay with YBS they showed me no loyalty simply grabbing at any opportunity to fine me despite my desire to remain in the mortgage deal I had.

Local Companies Are Best

We organised our mortgage, many years ago, through the Yorkshire because we wanted to go in and talk to a person rather than dealing with someone over the phone. Over the years, as agreements have come to an end, we have always made an appointment and gone in to discuss our options and feel that we have been given good advice and good deals. I think it is also useful that the company you get your mortgage off has a good knowledge of the local area so that you are confident they are giving sound advice based on facts such as were may not be a particularly good place to buy a house if there has been any history of flooding, subsistence etc. There may often be better deals elsewhere but we have always found that if we go in with an idea of what else is out there then you have a better chance of 'bartering' for the deal you want - there seems to be flexibility if you push for it. The staff are always friendly, approachable and knowledgeable. The do offer other 'deals' while you are sorting out your mortgage but do not push them onto you if they sense you are not interested. Whilst looking at your mortgage they also look at your accounts and offer advice on managing them more effectively and signpost you to other promotions or accounts that may serve you better and increase your investments.

can speak to someone in person

may not always be the cheapest

Excellent customer care and service

YBS have been great from the start. Excellent, non-pushy, staff who are very knowledgeable. Great range of products that were explained fully to me over the phone as too far to go to a branch. Called back when they said they would.
