Santander are a bank that offer a range of different mortgage options. The one you choose will depend on your own circumstances and what you're looking for. A lower LTV, which is set by how big a deposit you've managed to save, will affect the interest rate you get. You'll also need to look out for any mortgage fees and decide if you want your interest rate to be fixed, variable or to track the Bank of England base rate.

Good overall but customer service hit and miss. Over payment provisions flexible which is good - allows for core amount over calendar year avoiding confusion. But staff don't seem to know how payments can be made! Aside from that, good - easy to secure, easy to manage with easy to understand statements. Too much marketing received from Santander but that is a problem with most financial institutions I have engaged with in the past.

I've had a mortgage with Santander for 6 years now. The customer service is not bad but the mortgage rates they offer are not particularly competitive. When trying to move to another fixed rate they weren't particularly helpful or willing to help and for that reason I will be leaving them soon. That said, I've not had any major problems in the time I've been with them.

Have been with them for more than 10 years with Current Account Product. Joined them with Mortgage 4 years ago. They gave me good deal for 2 years Fixed Interest due to my positive record. But they give you good product for your money. Will advise you if the product is not right for you. Want force you into anything that is not suitable for your budget.

I would not look to use Santander again for a mortgage. Whilst the initial set up was easy enough, when I had to contact them at a later date to ask to extend the term of our mortgage in an attempt to make it easier to finish a building project I found them inflexible and unwilling to help despite the fact this would have reduced our monthly bills and increased the affordability. There were a number of monthly payments into our account that they would not consider for the affordability calculator (e.g child benefit) and this have a skewed picture of our incomings. Trying to discuss this was fruitless despite highlighting the fact that I have never missed a mortgage payment and surely looking to reduce payments would only make it more affordable.

Have had this mortgage for 20 years. We were able to get good rates for staying with them and not defaulting ! My husband rang them and asked. We were able to add on a loan for our daughter studying at Harvard though then had to extend the life of the mortgage to spread it out and it only came in 5 year chunks. We have been very happy with the service and don't plan to switch it anywhere. Would recommend, when we needed two

I have just given up the ghost with trying to get a small increase to my mortgage. It has taken so long for them to process my application, that I decided to go elsewhere. Ended up getting a better deal on an unsecured loan from Tesco finance, a prompt an efficient service. I will be moving my mortgage from Santander as soon as I can

Neutral. I don't feel they really have competitive rates. They're not that fair and flexible as they don't list their interest rates on their website you have to call to inquire about their rates. Didn't move as I have a small shared-ownership mortgage and didn't feel the hassle was worth my effort although I was told of much better offers elsewhere.

My opinion is neutral

The Santander Flexible Mortgage is just that - flexible! Funds can be added or withdrawn from a Savings Pot which means when you've got money you can offset the interest on your mortgage and at a time when saving rates are so low you can at least feel that you money is working hard for you. You can make instant transfers to your Current Account from your Mortgage Account, either from the Savings Pot or from your Available Funds (the sum of money that Santander feel you can have as a limit). Once upon a time mortgage accounts were almost invisible - you didn't know what you had paid off until the annual statement arrives. Not any more. With the Santander Flexible Mortgage you can see from day to day what's outstanding on your capital balance, what interest is due and paid, what your savings have helped you to offset. It's great!

Flexibility

The temptation to take funds out. You have to be disciplined.

We recently set up a small remortgage and decided to go with Santander after comparing a number of options. We considered them to be the best fit for our short term needs. This made a lot of sense for us as we do all our banking with Santander. They made the application process very easy and the transaction was very smooth indeed.
