Star Wars Actors - From 'a Long Time Ago' to Today
Star Wars is the third most successful movie series ever, with only James Bond and Harry Potter beating its box-office gross of over $2.45 billion (although that's without taking into account the masses of tie-in Star Wars products and sales of books, comics and television rights of the expansive media franchise).
It all started with the original trilogy, a long time go in a galaxy far, far away - so what happened to the actors who were immortalized by their Star Wars roles, and who has fared the best after the soaring highs? The team at money.co.uk fires up its hyperdrive propulsion systems for a quick tour of these actors' subsequent successes.
David Prowse
In a Galaxy Far, Far Away He Was: Darth Vader's body
Career After Star Wars: The bodybuilder has served as a trainer for other actors, including Cary Elwes in The Princess Bride. He also became an advocate for arthritis organizations.
What He's Been Up to Lately: Cameoing in charity Star Wars fan movies and annoying George Lucas - he was banned from official Star Wars conventions after he apparently "burnt too many bridges" with Lucasfilm. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2008, but thankfully is currently in remission.
Kenny Baker
In a Galaxy Far, Far Away He Was: R2D2
Career After Star Wars: Baker returned to the franchise for the second trilogy and for a brief time worked as a stand-up comedian in the 90s. He has acted in various movies including Labyrinth, Time Bandits and Amadeus and also appeared on the TV drama Casualty.
What He's Been Up to Lately: Feuding with co-star Anthony Daniels, who he maintains is rude to him and fans alike. In 2009 he published an autobiography "From Tiny Acorns: The Kenny Baker Story".
Anthony Daniels
In a Galaxy Far, Far Away He Was: C-3PO
Career After Star Wars: Daniels has had a few roles in British television and also worked as an adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon University's Entertainment Technology Centre. He's mostly hitched his wagon to the Star Wars franchise, repeating his role in the prequel trilogy, the 2008 Clone Wars film and the television series of the same name, while also working on various tie-in projects such as hosting the Star Wars: In Concert tour.
What He's Been Up to Lately: Star Wars, Star Wars and more Star Wars. He'll be playing C-3PO in the upcoming television series and voicing a different droid in the Star Wars MMORPG.
Sebastian Shaw
In a Galaxy Far, Far Away He Was: Darth Vader unmasked.
Career After Star Wars: The celebrated movie and theatre actor was in his late 70s when he made a brief appearance as the face of Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi. However he continued working, with several television roles and an acclaimed performance as a Cold War spy in the 1987 movie High Season. He also contributed to the education of young actors by running workshops with fellow members of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
What He's Been Up to Lately: Sadly, Shaw passed away in 1994 from natural causes at the age of 89.
Frank Oz
In a Galaxy Far, Far Away He Was: Yoda
Career After Star Wars: Oz Continued to work as a puppeteer with the Muppets and Sesame Street, voicing and controlling such well-loved characters as Miss Piggy and Grover. He also worked with puppets on the movie Labyrinth. He returned to Star Wars for the second trilogy of movies, and has also directed numerous films including Little Shop of Horrors and The Indian in the Cupboard.
What He's Been Up to Lately: While he has retired from the Muppets, he still occasionally voices his characters. He also continued directing, with his last movie being Death at a Funeral in 2007.
Mark Hamill
In a Galaxy Far, Far Away He Was: Luke Skywalker
Career After Star Wars: Somewhat typecast by his role as the brash young Jedi, Hamill initially focused on stage productions before branching into television movies and voice-over work (his portrayal as the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series earned him great acclaim). Additionally, he has frequently made appearances as himself or as a parody of his Star Wars character on TV.
What He's Been Up to Lately: He is currently a prolific voice actor, particularly in the Metalocalypse TV series and has a number of other projects due to be released. In 2005 he directed and starred in a mockumentary focused on comic book nerds. Either way, his hard work has clearly paid off as Hamill currently has £3.65 million to his name.
Alec Guinness
In a Galaxy Far, Far Away He Was: Obi-Wan Kenobi
Career After Star Wars: Alec Guinness continued to work as an actor in movie, television and theatre, winning numerous awards and earning a Knighthood in the process. As well as Obi-Wan Kenobi, he received critical praise for his portrayal of Prince Feisal in Lawrence of Arabia. He negotiated a share in the movies' profits, netting him over $3.5 million from the first movie.
What He's Been Up to Lately: Alec Guinness died in 2000 from liver cancer, but had continued acting well into the nineties with roles in Kafka, A Foreign Field, Mute Witness and Eskimo Day. He also wrote a 3-volume autobiography, recording each as an audiobook. The last volume was published the year before his death.
Carrie Fisher
In a Galaxy Far, Far Away She Was: Princess Leia
Career After Star Wars: Carrie Fisher went on to a display a wide range of talents. Over the years, she has published several best-selling novels including Postcards from the Edge in 1987. She continued to act in movies including When Harry Met Sally and The Blues Brother while also writing and adapting screenplays.
What She's Been Up to Lately: Performing her one-woman show, judging reality television, appearing on Entourage and becoming the spokesperson for Jenny Craig's weight loss program. Her diverse projects have added up to a net worth of around £15.3 million.
James Earl Jones
In a Galaxy Far, Far Away He Was: Darth Vader's voice
Career After Star Wars: James Earl Jones' iconic voice and masterful acting skills have seen him working constantly in a variety of theatre, television and movie roles, notably becoming a beloved figure to a generation of children as the voice of Mufasa in the Lion King. This steady work has given him an estimated net worth of £27.5 million.
What He's Been Up to Lately: Keeping busy, collecting a string of awards (including a Screen Actor's Guild Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009) and filming various projects including Jack and the Beanstalk (2010) and Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie (2012).
Harrison Ford
In a Galaxy Far, Far Away He Was: Han Solo
Career After Star Wars: Ford's career to date has been packed with so many notable roles that a concise summary here would be impossible, but you may have heard of such movies as the Indiana Jones franchise, The Hunt for Red October and The Fugitive. These and other successes have contributed to his status as the third highest grossing US star at the box office. Ford's movies had grossed over £1.82 billion in the US box office and over £3.65 billion worldwide by 2008 alone. It's unsurprising that he's sitting on over £121 million himself.
What He's Been Up to Lately: He reprised his role as Indiana Jones in the 2008 installment of the franchise. His other movies since the new millennium haven't been very successful, and his latest project, Cowboys & Aliens, received a mixed response.
