Mobile Phone Recycling

An Online Round-Up

Unwanted electronic devices have valuable components and resale potential which you can cash in on. It doesn't take much to turn your old phone into a £50 note, and to make matters even easier most mobile phone recycling sites on this page offer free postage, and the turnaround for the transaction is only a matter of days.

It's not just about the money either, throwing away mobile phones is a pointless waste of valuable materials. The following sites, and others, buy unwanted mobile phones and reuse their components - while paying you for your trouble.

The team at money.co.uk have compared the features and usability of 13 leading mobile phone recycling sites, testing them out by acquiring quotes for a selection of currently popular phones (Blackberry 9000, iPhone 3GS and the HTC Desire.)

SellMyMobile.com

SellMyMobile.com is a mobile phone recycling comparison site that searches other phone buying sites to find you the best price. This snazzy search engine has been featured on the BBC's Working Lunch programme, as well as in the Guardian, the Telegraph and countless other respected publications. They have a sister site, SellCell.com, which caters for their US customers.

It's incredibly simple to use and listed prices in a clear and comprehensive way that made it easy to compare the options. The site they listed as offering the best trade-in price was their "exclusive" Cashberry site.

While the other sites are all about the money, this one places emphasis on the environment. As their tagline goes, "Get the most money for your mobile, and do your bit for the planet".

The website could be that of an organic muesli company, but the search function is simple and easy to use. When you type in your phone and hit enter, it'll come up with a list of matches. On the next page it'll outline the best paying buyers, and state whether their postage is free and how they'll pay you.

Mobiles2Recycle.com

Mobiles2Recycle.com is another mobile phone recycling comparison site, which gets prices from a number of phone buying sites to find you the best deal.

The site isn't particularly stunning to look at, but that's not what we're after here. We're looking for functionality and price so there's no point wading through several pages of garbage before finding they'll pay you peanuts. Mobiles2Recycle does not disappoint - it showed us just what we wanted to see.

CashForMobiles.info

CashForMobiles does precisely what it says on the tin. There are no bells and whistles - the site's priorities are in plain view.

The front page of CashForMobiles.info gives you a little glimpse of what others are being paid for their phones. It also shows you the most valuable phones that are being recycled at the moment.

However, the main benefit is that you can still get up to 90% of the best "trade-in price" of your phone, even if it's damaged or broken.

This site has a particularly attractive purple design, with pictures of happy phone users on the right hand side. Again it's quite clear about what it wants to do.

The website's software is not quite up to scratch. It took us two tries to get it to work properly - however, this was a one-time problem and we didn't come across it again.

When we actually got to the results, they were not only less clear than other websites, but the price they were offering was slightly lower too.

MoPay.co.uk

MoPay has a fairly active social network, which is unusual for a company like this so we wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Unlike the others, it's not a search engine - MoPay are the ones that will actually buy your phone.

The website itself is fun to use, and you can see what everybody else is doing at the same time. Surprisingly, one of the most popular phones that other people are selling is the ancient Nokia everybody used to have - they're paying £1 for it.

We found the whole website quite friendly and while we understand why people like them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter, we were disappointed to see the very low price they quoted for our Blackberry.

O2recycle.co.uk

You'd think that with a huge brand like O2 behind it, this website would be one of the best. The quirky adverts on British TV make it seem like such a friendly and informal brand...

Which is why we were immediately taken aback by how bad the website was. Whereas every other website has a simple search function where you type in the make or model of your phone, O2 have decided that drop-down menus are much better; there are three, and once you select from the top one, the page reloads in its entirety.

In their defence, they don't make a profit from this at all - all the proceeds go to making the world a better place through their Think Big initiative. It's just a shame their website - and their prices - are so Think Small.

WeeeBuy.co.uk

Instead of parting with just your mobile phone, you can trade in your other unwanted gadgetry on this site that gives you "electronic cash for trash" too.

The website immediately encourages you to consider selling old games controllers, unwanted sat-navs, and even computers you no longer use - basically, anything with electronic components that can be salvaged and reused.

The search functionality was quick and there's an easy way of entering the condition your phone is in so you get an accurate price.

Mobilephonerecycling.uk.com

This website is another comparison search engine, but it also has banners at the top which take you to game and music buyersites.

The website itself is quite easy to use, despite using a similar (but better-executed) drop-down menu as the O2 website.

The search page has a slightly pop-art feel to it, but the interim confirmation page feels a bit long-winded and the search results didn't have any of the important information about payment next to them.

Nevertheless, the prices they were offering were right up there with the best.

Envirofone.com

One of the most prolific advertisers on British prime-time television, Envirophone had a lot to live up to.

It's a friendly and well-put-together site with an interesting blog and some entertaining extras. This is the company that brought us those lengthy adverts and the timeless "WONGA " gentlemen, who quickly became a viral internet sensation.

Sadly, despite buttons suggesting we share the price on social media, they weren't looking to pay very much for the Blackberry compared to some of the others.

That said, it is certainly worth a look if you're after a very quick selling process and don't mind not getting top dollar for an old phone.

Mazumamobile.com

Another prolific television advertiser with a lot to live up to, Mazuma first started advertising in 2008, and have since become one of the market leaders in mobile phone recycling and indeed TV ads.

As Mazuma is the company that will actually buy your phone, rather than a search engine, there are no complicated tables - just a picture of your phone and a price.

We discovered that the price was rather on the low side, but one benefit is that Mazuma will pay you via cheque in the post or via same-day bank transfer.

This could be a handy feature for some, and it is worth noting that there's no difference in the amount you'll get via each payment method.

Not one of the more famous names but they do what they say on the tin, offering BACS, cheque, and a number of other payment options.

It's a shame the prices weren't up there with the others on this list.

However, we did find a lucrative deal on this website which pays you £5 for every friend you refer to them.

Given it's likely plenty of your friends will have unwanted mobile phones, you could probably earn a pretty penny if they sell them using this site.

Pound4phone.com

This isn't the most aesthetically pleasing website, so we were interested to see how this underdog would fare against the heavyweights.

Confusingly, when searching for our Blackberry Bold 9000, we found that they'd listed the model twice.

As a result, we thought that Pound4Phone was perhaps a slapdash affair, but we were wrong.

It transpires we'd not only stumbled across the easiest site to use, but also the site which paid the most across the board against all the sites we'd checked out.

So, hats off to Pound4Phone.com.
