This shows that investing based on past growth doesn't always guarantee you a profit in the future.

Investing into fund managers needs to be approached as a long-term plan so to cope with the fluctuation of the stock market.

It's important to remember that cashing in your investment at the right time can make the difference between you making a huge profit or a giant loss so make sure you keep on top of your investment as often as possible.

How do you choose the right investment?

Doing research into your investment is important, here we look at a few different types of investments you could look at when it comes to investing.

Ethical funds

Is investing in the right kind of company important to you? Ethical fund managers have restrictions on what type of companies they can invest into. The restrictions are linked to companies that pose a threat to the environment, health and human rights.

Instead, ethical funds choose to invest in companies that are making a positive impact on the environment or support community welfare.

Corporate bonds

When companies seek funding for development, for example if a major brand supermarket plans to build a new store, they take out a loan. When you invest into a corporate bond, the money is used to lend to companies in this way, so effectively these companies are lending the money from you.

There will generally be a set term on the investment you make, so that you can make a minimum return on your investment over a set time, like receiving interest on the investment loan.

There is also the opportunity to gain further growth if the company who has borrowed your money makes a bigger profit that predicted, however, if the company default on their payments then there is a risk that you will not get your entire investment back.

To reduce the risk of losing your investment, you can look at spreading the risk between several companies in hope that if one of the companies doesn't return your investment, another company will and then some.

Income and/or growth

You can choose to take an income from your investments if required. You can usually choose the income percentage, usually up to 5%, which you would receive monthly.

This becomes disadvantageous if the growth on your overall investment isn't growing to compensate your monthly income withdrawals. Lowering your monthly income percentage can help restore balance to your investment.

You can also choose to let the investment grow without any withdrawals. Investing in this way gives you more of a "riding the wave" experience of the stock market as fund shares can fluctuate constantly, offering growth and decline at any time.

Can you invest in the best performing funds from 2013?

Sadly, finding the best performing fund for 2013 doesn't give you any reassurances of how to invest this year.

If you require advice go and see a specialist, and make sure you study any material you are given before you invest.

Make sure to discuss the impact of fees on your investment, whether you could benefit from a lump-sum investment, a regular saving investment or both.

Compare deals for investing

Remember to check the fees linked to investing. The common fees to look out for are: initial fee, annual management fee and exit fee. These fees can take up to 5% off your investment so make sure you shop around for the best deal.

Once you have decided on your approach, you will be able to shop around and compare the best deals for investing this year, finding the cheapest fees available and hopefully sending you off on a successful venture on the stock market.
