21% Increase per month.

We have had our house and contents with Santander for 18 years and have only ever made one claim, as far as the property we're in now it's been over 10 years with NO claims whatsoever so when I opened my auto renewal letter expecting the usual £1 - £2 a month increase I was disgusted with the fact it has gone up by £12.15 a month that's over 21% more. If they are going to commit daylight robbery it would be nice if the letter had given a reason. We are nowhere near flooding, landfills or any such thing and I'm sure as hell that the house is in the same place as when we bought it. Disgusting.

Disappointing, and got me with the cancellation charge

I'm usually pretty careful with checking small print etc, but every now and then I fall foul - Santander got me. I've never made a claim, mostly because the excess fees make it not worthwhile, and have been with them for over a year for contents insurance - in January my policy 'auto-renewed' with the usual Congratulations! You are covered for another year! email that makes it sound like a good thing. I've just called to cancel as I'm moving house and don't need my insurance any longer as my partner has his own - and have been stung by a £35 cancellation charge. Absolutely gutted, and massively unethical considering I'm not cancelling to go to another provider, and I have no choice in the matter! Disgraceful practice.

Santander Home Insurance

I had heard Santander was the worst insurance company in UK, but my recent experience confirms this. After years without any paid claim, we had an issue covered by the policy. After insulting and aggressive treatment of us by the surveyor, they made an offer on the phone but refused to confirm in writing or email. Then they simply refused any payment and resorted to intimidation by sending a letter saying they had cancelled our policy because of our "failure" and other insurance companies should be informed of this. We have since discovered that over the years, they had raised our premium every time we phoned to ask a question because they counted it as a claim even though only once they came an had a look at the issue, and disappeared without any action. We have been deceived and defrauded, but UK authorities should not allow such cavalier behaviour to continue in this country's financial sector.

Is a registered company and not a corner shop broker.

Practices if not illegal, certainly unethical.

Buildings and contents insurance

I have been with santander for over 20 years and have been flooded on three occasions over the last 12 years from flat above, each time i have asked them to claim against my neighbours insurance Company but have been told no its too difficult for them, instead my insurance premiums and my excesses have gone up. Just received renewal policy in and decided enough was enough when the are trying to charge me 766 for a 2 bedroom flat. Went online and got a john lewis policy for a third of the price and with lower excesses.

Seven Points on Santander Home Insurance

My customer survey of incompetent insurance companies has revealed the following about Santander Home insurance (I will publish other results in due course) 1) Santander Policy starts with a relatively competitive premium, but is automatically raised often without informing the customer and if discovered, irrelevant reasons are given. Policyholder must be on the alert and closely investigate any such rise. 2) The Company is not known for honouring its undertaking when it comes to payment of claims. 3) To avoid payment, it resorts to dubious tactics to pressure claimant to give up their claim. 4) It uses surveyors from hardly reputable companies for assessment and usually rejection of claims, insist on getting a fair assessment. 5) Some methods of pressuring the claimant are certainly unethical, and hardly legal such as using recorded and suitably edited "for training" phone calls as dossier evidence. This is breach of trust and liable to prosecution. 5) For small claims, even if unpaid, the company automatically raises premium considerably, and for larger claims, cancels the policy especially if the policy has been in place for a long time and substantial amounts have already been paid in premium. Cancellation of policy does not release the company of past obligation. 6) These issues were raised with Santander Banking section who implicitly endorsed them, but blamed AVIVA (underwriters of Santander) for imposing its own methods on Santander. This does not exonerate Santander. 7) Santander Insurance is not recommended inny customer survey known to me, and ranks very low in many.
