Party hosts could find themselves in trouble if they fail to secure personal liability cover for their Bonfire Night celebrations.
Consumers have already been urged to check their home insurance policies ahead of Hallowe'en and the arrival of darker evenings, but they are now also being advised to ensure they have personal liability cover to provide full protection on Bonfire Night.
According to esure home insurance, around 2.8 million Britons will be hosting a bonfire party at their home this year and 4.6 million will be putting on their own fireworks display. It points out that accidents can occur and homeowners could be left personally liable if they do not have adequate cover in place.
"A badly-contained bonfire, a mis-handled firework, a box of fireworks left too close to flames, a loose Catherine wheel - these can all provide the basis for a hefty personal liability claim if someone is injured or property is damaged as a result," the insurer warned.
And it advised those planning Bonfire Night parties to ensure bonfires are positioned well away from fences and trees, follow the necessary safety precautions when lighting fireworks and avoid drinking alcohol.
Personal liability is one of the least common claims made on home insurance policies, according to esure. However, when claims do occur they can be large and very serious.
