Most of the events during the Commonwealth Games will take place within easy travelling distance of Glasgow, either within or around the city centre. Here's the lowdown:

Celtic Park

  • Location - 2.3 miles from the city centre
  • Capacity - 60,832
  • Events - Opening ceremony

The largest of the Commonwealth Games venues, Celtic Park (home of Celtic FC) will host the official opening ceremony.

Hampden Park

  • Location - 2.6 miles from the city centre
  • Capacity - 52,063
  • Events - Track & field athletics & closing ceremony

Home of the Scottish national football team, Hampden Park is one of the event's most iconic landmarks and is undergoing huge renovations to set the stage for track and field athletics competitions and the official closing ceremony.

Ibrox Stadium

  • Location - 2.7 miles from the city centre
  • Capacity - 51,082
  • Events - Rugby Sevens

The playing field of the Rangers Football Club, this beloved venue enjoys a long history with the city and will host the rugby sevens competition.

Emirates Arena

  • Location - 2.2 miles from the city centre
  • Capacity - 5,000
  • Events - Cycling

Also home to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, this massive arena is expected to be packed with enthusiastic crowds come the first weekend.

Glasgow National Hockey Centre

  • Location - 1.7 miles from the city centre
  • Capacity - 500 permanent, 5,000 temporary
  • Events - Hockey

This brand new facility at Glasgow Green has been specially designed for the upcoming hockey events so it should be state of the art.

SECC Precinct

  • Location - 1.7 miles from the city centre
  • Capacity - Up to 12,500 depending on event
  • Events - Gymnastics, Boxing, Judo, Netball, Wrestling and Weightlifting/Powerlifting

The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) will showcase gymnastics, boxing, judo, netball, wrestling and weightlifting/powerlifting, as well as function as the main press centre for the Games.

Scotstoun Sports Campus

  • Location - 1.7 miles from the city centre
  • Capacity - 12,500
  • Events - Squash and Table Tennis

This multi-faceted facility will host the squash and table tennis competitions.

Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre

  • Location - 1.9 miles from the city centre
  • Capacity - 2,500
  • Events - Bowls

Kelvingrove has reconstructed five bowling greens and will host the lawn bowls competitions.

Tollcross International Swimming Centre

  • Location - 3.3 miles from the city centre
  • Capacity - 2,000 permanent, extra 3,000 temporary
  • Events - Swimming

This refurbished venue will host the swimming competitions.

Royal Commonwealth Pool

  • Location - 45 miles from the city centre (Edinburgh)
  • Capacity - 2,000
  • Events - Diving

This proud venue is located in the capital, Edinburgh, and will be host to the diving competitions.

Strathclyde Country Park

  • Location - 14 miles from the city centre
  • Capacity - Open to public (parkland)
  • Events - Rowing, Sailing and Cycling

This picturesque locale with rolling hills is where a number of dramatic sporting events will take place, including rowing, sailing, and cycling. Although outside of the city centre it's easily accessible by public transport.

Cathkin Braes Mountain Bike Trails

  • Location - 6.7 miles from the city centre
  • Capacity - Open to public (parkland)
  • Events - Mountain Biking

Some of the most riveting, rugged biking trials will be taking place in and around Cathkin Braes Country Park, they're definitely worth venturing out of the city for.

Barry Buddon Shooting Centre

  • Location - 90.1 miles from the city centre (East Coast)
  • Events - Shooting

This sporting facility is located on the picturesque east coast in the Ministry of Defence training camp. If you're keen on shooting and none of the other sporting events then you could bypass Glasgow altogether and head East instead.
