How to Get Cheap Gas

We explain how you can save on your gas supply simply by switching providers.

Energy prices seem to be constantly rising; however switching your gas supplier can provide a way of dramatically cutting your household bills. Switching suppliers tends to be relatively straight forward and when completed online, involves little paperwork and no interruption to your supply, just a noticeable cut in your bills!

Most companies offer a range of different price plans; the most suitable for you will depend on the way gas is used in your home. Popular plans include those in which the price per unit of gas is fixed for a specified period of time. With the current trend for rising prices, fixed plans provide some guarantee as to what you'll pay over the next few years. Conversely however, if gas prices drop, you will be tied in to a deal and potentially be paying more per unit than the market value. Capped plans are also popular as they specify a maximum amount you will pay per unit but still enable you to benefit from reductions in gas prices.

It is important to bear in mind that with energy plans such as the above, it is the price per unit that is fixed or capped, and not the actual bill amount as this will be dependent on how much gas you use. Additionally, most gas providers incorporate a standing charge into their bills; this is a specified amount imposed for every day that your gas has been provided by the supplier. It is possible to opt for a service without a standing charge; however this is only really suitable for very light gas users as the basic price per unit tends to be significantly higher.

The method of payment you choose may also have an impact on your bill. Payment by direct debit often attracts a significant discount; additionally paying monthly helps spread the cost of heavy winter fuel bills throughout the year. Other options are quarterly direct debit, payment on bill and annual pre-payment, where the total cost of your annual bill is estimated based on precious usage and any excess amount is refunded at the year end.

Most suppliers offer a comparison service, whereby you simply need to enter your postcode and annual usage and a quote will be provided to demonstrate how much you can save. It is then simple to switch as the new gas supplier does most of the work for you; you'll just need to provide a gas reading when you change over and you will be set up for a future of cheaper energy bills.
