Graduation and the subsequent period is one of transition and change, and just like in a lot of other things, this rings also true in your bank account. We look at how to get the best graduate account whatever your plans.
One of the biggest changes when moving from a student to a graduate current account comes in the shape of the overdraft facilities offered.
Many banks that have offered students free or low-cost overdrafts gradually reduce the amount of red you can be in over the coming 2 to 3 years.
This happens to wean now-earning graduates back into the black and should be encouragement to clear your debt – if not you will end up paying high rates of interest on this overdraft debt.
So what should you look for to get the best graduate accounts?
Overdrafts
Graduate overdrafts are part and parcel of many of the banks services to the newly employable.
Many graduate accounts offer interest free overdrafts though there is a vast difference in the limits and time periods available.
Banks usually reduce the amount of interest free overdraft graduates have with each consecutive year.
For example you may be offered 0% interest on a £3000 overdraft the first year after you graduate, 0% on £2,000 in year two and 0 % on £1,000 in year three with you overdraft needing to be in the black by the end of the third year.
After each reduction, any money over the interest free limit is charged at the usual overdraft rate if your graduate bank account overdraft exceeds this.
Look out for Offers
Many graduate accounts offer you a number of benefits in the hope of getting you to stay with them. These benefits range right across the board and include everything from mobile phone insurance to things such as travel cover and breakdown cover for your vehicle.
However, the downside is that they generally charge for them.
For this reason, you should weigh up your options and decide whether they are worth the cost. In many cases people pay for these benefits and never make use of them – so compare graduate accounts and then decide on the one suitable for your needs.
You should also check to see whether the bank specificies a minimum monthly income for free banking. If this is the case you need to make sure that you’re able to meet it before you apply.

Taking a little time to compare your options will mean saving a large amount of money in the future, through lower interest rates for longer.
Switch
Moving banks can offer you the chance to get a better deal on finance. While you may have a very suitable student account from a certain bank, you may find their graduate account not so favourable.
Should this be the case you can easily move to a different account without much hassle if you use your new bank’s switching service. This can generally be arranged in minutes and usually only involves filling out of one form.
