I had been with Alliance and Leicester and stayed where I was when Santander took over; finally got my spouse to join in a joint account which pays more interest than the Building Society. At last we know where we are from week to week and can budget accordingly, plus not having to go into town and pay parking, also we are not getting any younger!

I have been with Abbey National/Santander for 20 years and although, I incurred some negative customer service experiences at one point with Abbey, under Santander I seem to have had no real issues. The 123 account is the leading account on the market from my perspective. Not only is the cash back great but, so is the 3% on balances up to 20k

I have banked with Santander since 1988. The transfer of business from Abbey National to Abbey and then to Santander had no effect on my account at all, there were no problems. Every query I have had has always been handled efficiently and promptly. In recent years Santander have become more aware of their existing customers and I have been offered preferential rates on both credit cards and loans as a result of being a long standing customer. I now have a current account where I do not incur charges if I go over my overdraft limit, which in my current financial position is essential.

I would highly recommend this bank as I have been with them for quite a few years now and have never had any issues with them. The account itself is a very good one with a rewards scheme that they give you back money for certain transactions. The staff are always helpful and very friendly. Anything I have had to call them about has been dealt with quickly

I moved to Santander when I finished paying my mortgage off - I'd had a linked interest only account with Barclays so had to change anyway. Their 123 account offered the best deal at the time with money back on essential spends - energy, council tax etc and interest paid on balances held in the account so makes a bit of interest when rates are so low at the moment.

Interest paid on balances. Cash back on bills.

For the very few shares that I have when Santander was Abbey National, they are really a waste of time, not just because of the economy being in a bad place, but because of Spanish law stating that you must pay their withholding tax as well as UK tax on any interest. Total waste of time really and had I have known this before we had them I would have changed to a UK bank.

I have heard Santander customer service is great if you hold a 123 account. Unfortunately I have not had the best customer service from Santander and I am looking to move accounts as soon as possible. I wrote to complain to them several times and it took them a huge amount of time to reply each time despite saying they had although none of their letters reached me.

Santander 123 Current Account is great. If you have 3000 GBP or more in your account you earn 3% - better than ISA and you can reach your money whenever you want! I know you have to pay taxes on interest, but still I think the interest is great because other current accounts pay you nothing really. I cannot comment much on customer service as I never had so far any problems and I am their customer for 5 years now.

Like I've said on another review, Santander have really gone downhill in recent years. Incentives for being with them appear to have dried up, their initiatives not so good and they just seem to look for more ways to charge you for being with them. It is so easy so swap bank accounts now and that is probably what I will be doing.

Santander International Student Current Account

Initially, I approached Santander for a Local Student Account - as I am a British Citizen - however, since I had not been living in the UK for very long at the time, they told me I would need some form of credit history and residence history for the account. So to save me the hassle, they suggest opening the International Student Account, which I did. It was quick and painless and every interaction I have had with an employee of Santander has been incredibly pleasant. Another great thing is that I do not get charged if I go to another bank's ATM to withdraw cash. Unfortunately, I am charged 5 quid a month for the account, which, I would think, should be waived for students. Also, the international account does not have as many perks as the local student account. I think some form of incentive should be made to bring in international students. This country is a melting pot, Santander should take full advantage.

Excellent customer service; quick and easy to open acct;

Limited perks; 5gbp a month fee
