Current Account

My main bug bear with HSBC is the overseas call centre. I try to avoid telephone banking as much as possible because of previous experience on the phone with them. I have been locked out of my account when I couldn't understand what the rep was asking me, and he couldn't understand me. There are times when it would be useful to use telephone banking, but I will go into the branch or use the internet where possible instead.

Also, every year, I get charged for them to review and agree an overdraft facility every year. The overdraft hasn't changed for 15 years yet the money still gets taken to review this facility. As it never changes, I would prefer them not to review it and I could keep the fee.

The self service machines in branch are so sensitive it can take a long time to pay a cheque in.

On the positive side, the internet banking site is good and user friendly. The fraud team have been quick to pick up on unusual spend patterns when my card has been cloned.

OK but would not necessarily recommend ANY bank

I have had my current account with HSBC for over 40 years and remain with them because there is no real reason to move. They do an OK job, they make mistakes like any bank and some of their services have caused me issues (eg car insurance) but overall I don't see a need to move. I would not however recommend any bank to anyone else. Make your own mind up.

Originally here as a foreigner, I struggled to get a bank account here initially, but went along to an induction seminar during which they had HSBC representatives come in and help us set up accounts. I've never really had any kind of problem with them. Every time I've had money issues I've given them a call and they've helped me sort it out quite quickly. The call centres are UK based and the dealings I've had with them have been positive experiences. Mostly though, I do online banking and I find the format very easy to use.

Good Flexibility, but Appalling Customer Service

We have one of HSBC's Premier accounts, and we've had a real nightmare with the so-called Relationship Managers. We started with one in 2011/12, then she moved on, so we had a different one for a year, then an email to say she was leaving too. Next email I received was A YEAR later from some introducing themselves as my new relationship manager! We've since moved house, so I asked her to connect me with a relationship manager in Bath: that was four months ago, and nothing since...

They're great for fraudulent debit card use, which happened to my husband - very quick to refund, and take details for the claim.

Also, customer service over the phone is great - there seems to be a 'queue jump' system in place for Premier customers, and the assistants are always on the ball, and take no for an answer, if you tell them you don't want them to sell you any products!

HSBC Current Bank Account

HSBC have an excellent customer services department, they are always very helpful and efficient. The customer services department were really helpful when I lost my bank card earlier this year and had had to cancel the old one and get a replacement, it arrived quickly and there were no security problems. I also like their security features giving me piece of mind that my money is safe. I do all my banking online which is very easy to use and allows me to keep regular tabs on my finances
