FairFX Currency Card. Not very fair.

Having a pre-loaded card abroad seems like a good deal, though you still get stiffed by ATM charges. The problem occurs when you reach the expiry date of the card you have to either add £150 worth of currency to it, take it to an ATM and empty it out, thus incurring the ATM charge, or finally give them a tenner to retrieve your money, that has been sitting in their account earning them interest! How fair is that?

Do not rely on this card alone for travel yo unusual places: it's considered a credit card so you get charged 3% in some places. Card seems to be prone to failing in many EPOS terminals, which then blocks or freezes that amount for a default period of 21 days, even though the transaction failed. Also no telephone support available, and the email support was of little or no help.

Shiny and black. Good for squashing bugs

Perceived to be a credit card, attracting charges. Funds blocked.

Beware Fair FX Card - customer service is terrible, no phone numbers and they delay refund

I recently had an issue wit FairFx. A transaction was declined, but still the money came off the card. I had to pay with an alternative card. I contacted FairFX and they asked me to provide a letter from the Hotel and proof of payment. I did this. Now they are not responding to mails and the money has not been returned. They do not have any phone numbers. The card is a great idea, but if anything goes wrong, you are on your own.

card gives good rates and is easily used

I purchased 230,00 Japanese yen from this company and received only 23,000. That is a discrepancy of over £1300.00 They have so far failed to provide the missing currency and seem incapable of informing their customers about what is happening. I have managed to find a telephone number for them. if you have any problems ring 02077789300.

Having used the card abroad to mixed success (and halfway through my trip realising it was cheaper to use my normal bank card anyway), I returned home with some money still left on the card. FairFX won't let you take any of your own money back off the card without stupid extra charges, even when you're in the UK and are withdrawing you're own money. It's absolutely ridiculous. Then after having their customer services tell me that they were fully entitled to effectively steal my money, they then told me to be more polite to them, which, given they had just taken my money, was the final straw. I would not go back to the company if they were the last one left standing. I'd frankly, prefer to carry huge amounts of cash around instead of one of their cards.

Average rates when abroad.

Just been to France on holiday purchased fairfx euro card for the trip . The card was preloaded for use on holiday. The main purpose of the card was to avoid charges using cards abroad but on several occasions the card was declined resulting in other cards being used and charges incurred. I complained to fairfx to be told petrol stations and toll roads can't check balance on cards and to protect fairfx from cards going into negative balance the transaction would be declined. Unlike the claim on the website if the MasterCard symbol is displayed the card is accepted this is not always the case

This card was bought (£10 cost) in 2010. I used it easily in Dubrovnik but couldn't find anywhere accepting it in Sorrento, Italy 2012. I was rather shocked to get an email in 2013 requesting £5.95 to renew the card before it's expiry date or pay £10 (standard charge) to transfer the remaining funds back to my bank. From my experience I think this card is good in theory but limited in practice and especially if you don't travel a lot or go to smaller towns abroad. Overall disappointed with product.

OK in large cities abroad

Costly card renewal/ cacellation.

After using my Fair FX card to open a voucher at the Ibis Hotel in Cancun, we then left and paid with my wife's credit card, asking the IBIS to call all the charges in and refund them. Upon checking my balance I noticed that $600 had been taken off the card and not yet refunded. Two weeks later I am still trying to get this sorted out with two companies that are continually blaming each other or master card. Despite the fact that I have gone out of my way to get them both the information they requested it looks like neither are taking action. I have resigned myself to waiting the 21 days which Mastercard use to cover themselves. Hopefully then the money will be refunded. I decided to let this go and use my card by doing another top up. It is a good job I didn't, as when I tried to use it at a HSBC cash machine to withdraw money, I was told the card is invalid. I emailed Fair FX straight away and over 24 hours after sending them an email I still have no response. Up until these incidents the card has worked fine, however, I've found the customer service to be terrible. Had I been relying on this card I would now be stuck in Mexico without funds. It is ironic that they have fair in their name as the way they treat customers seem to unfair to me. The customer service needs to improve dramatically before I would recommend this card to anyone.

FairFx - Great rate but useless denominations

Last 4 exchanges they've dumped loads of 100euro notes on me which in Spain very few Bars/Restaurants will accept due to many forgeries. Complained every time and keep being palmed of with "we're considering giving choice of denominations on the web site..." - that's been going on for over a year now! Like the rate and delivery but no point getting a good return if you can't spend it! Been forced to look elsewhere in future, real shame!

Fantastic! really wouldn't travel to North America without one, preload with dollars (or Euros) and you can only spend what you have, marvellous idea, great service too, and, if you need to add funds it's just a phone call, such a good idea and such a good way to keep in budget
