Broadband Explained
Broadband has revolutionised the way we use the internet. Its widespread introduction has not only greatly enhanced the speed at which we can access information online, but also the range and sophistication of the content available.
We can now access information almost instantaneously (with broadband downloading information anything between 10 and 100 times faster than a traditional dialup connection), download music and film files, have real time video or message conversations and even watch high quality TV and make phone calls using our broadband connections.
The packages offered by ISPs (internet service providers) tend to be on a pay monthly basis and vary in terms of the connection speed and download allowance they offer. Lower connection speeds and limited allowances will attract a lower associated monthly price and should be more than adequate for a light to medium internet user. Packages offering higher connection speeds and unlimited downloads are more suited to those who intend to frequently download large files, stream information, make phone calls and set up home networks using their broadband connection; consequently these tend to be more costly.
ADSL is the most widely available method for providing a broadband connection as it transfers information using the BT phone network. This means that the majority of homes in the UK already have the facility in place to support broadband. ADSL transfers information using higher frequencies than those used to transmit voice signals and so, unlike a dial up connection, it can be used simultaneously with telephones and fax machines; this enables you to remain constantly connected to the internet.
Cable is another method of internet connection and uses the fibre optic cable network to transfer information into your home. Cable broadband is often offered in bundle packages with cable TV and phone connection and so can be an economical option.
The technology used by broadband means that it is possible to create wired or wireless networks enabling several people to access the internet at once using the same broadband connection. The ability to create broadband networks is incredibly useful and cost effective for homes with several computers and small businesses alike.
By comparing the connection methods, speeds and download limits available from a range of internet service providers, you should be able to find a cost efficient, reliable broadband package to suit your needs.
