Warning: Tesco Cut Clubcard Rates

by from money.co.uk

Your Tesco Clubcard points will soon be worth less so you need to act fast if you don't want to miss out. Here's what you need to know.

At the moment you can quadruple the value of your Tesco Clubcard points by swapping them for Tesco Rewards. You also earn 1 Clubcard point for every £1 you spend on fuel.

However, this is changing for the worse in the very near future.

What is changing?

From 6th December 2010 the exchange rate for Tesco Rewards is going to drop.

Instead of being able to quadruple the value of your Clubcard points by trading them for Rewards, you'll only be able to triple the value instead.

So while you can exchange a £2.50 Clubcard voucher for £10 to spend on Rewards now, from the 6th of December 2010 the same amount will only get you £7.50.

The amount of Clubcard points you'll get when you buy fuel is also being halved.

From of the 1st of November you will earn just1 Clubcard point for every £2 spent at the pump rather than the 2 points you currently get.

So what do I need to do?

If you don't want to lose out then you need to make sure you exchange your Clubcard points for Rewards by the 5th of December 2010.

This way you will still get to quadruple the purchase power, and the value of your points.

Unfortunately, the only way to keep on earning 1 Clubcard point for every £1 you spend on petrol from November is to pay using a Tesco credit card. This isn't going to be realistic for everyone, but if you spend a lot on Tesco fuel it may be worth considering.

Is it all bad news?

No, Tesco has also announced it plans to extend it's double points scheme in store over Christmas meaning you can continue to earn more points on your shopping. Visit the Tesco Clubcard website for more information.

As if Tesco don't make enough money as it is, they have to squeeze a bit extra to give to the shareholders, instead of the loyal customers, greed going into overdrive!!!!!!!!!

Surely with all the profits Tesco make, the least they can do is give the customers 4x the reward. I am not surprised more and more people go to Morrisons and Asda. Tesco are not loyal to their customers. The least they should do is let customers use their current points without setting a use-by date on them. Points collected after 5th December could be reduced to 3x reward. Knowing Tesco they will not even consider it.

There is always a catch - nothing is free! I wonder what they will do when sales drop off in the new year?

Let us recognise that all -even major chains - will have to economise where possible. I have made good use of the 4 for 1 deal on travel and holidays for some time and will miss it but 3 for 1 is still a good deal. Using a credit cared for fuel to maintain double points is no hardship as long as the money, which would be spent on fuel in any case, is left in the bank.
until the bill arrives and paying it over the phone is a simple task.
Do not beleive that Tesco customers should complain about this economy measure.

It's a shame to see this scheme being down-graded - Tesco Clubcard deals always provided an invaluable way of saving money on everyday essentials, such as car services and breakdown.

It is probably a good idea to look at whether you should cash in some points before the end of December, remembering that most deals allow you 3 months to use the clubcard vouchers you receive - although it looks as though the RAC membership offer is due to end soon as well!

with all the profits they are making, is seems a little penny-pinching to me especially when their petrol is NOT the cheapest by far.I thought they were a leader in the market place instead they seem to be a follower
How would compare the Tesco Clubcard system against the Sainsbury Nectar system !!

by denishawkins, 1 year ago

It seems very unfair that vouchers you currently have will be decreased in value -surely they should honour the value of current vouchers and then change for all vouchers issued after the appropriate date. Customers are being penalised. We will now be forced to do things in a hurry and perhaps not get quite what we want.

It looks like we will have to revert to Sainsbury's

I agree with Denis. Tesco have been followers for the last year or so, adjusting or matching prices only when one of their rivals do so. The 'every little helps' doesnt apply to customers anymore, only the shareholders.

I live a short drive away from Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda, Lidl and Morrisons. Although Tesco is nearest I only go for specific items as I find them much dearer then the others and I'd sooner pay less and go without reward points. I've never used the reward scheme for holidays or outings etc. but it doesn't surprise me in the least that Tesco are doing this, they've got to pay for the celebrity voiceovers somehow! The customer is just a necessary evil to them I feel - and their petrol is the most expensive in my area too.

Some of you talk about going over to Sainsbury's, but, if I'm not mistaken, the Nectar card only earns 1 point for every £2 spent.

I think that its good that tesco keep the double points as other shops dont give you anything, and its good that you can still pay by using your vouchers

Disapointing, especially when their UK profits have slowed. You'd expect they would try to at least keep incentives the same as at present.

Also it is worth a note, in the week or two before Tesco's bring out the Spend over 50 quid and get 5p a litre off fuel-they INCREASE the pump prices!! so sorry folk we don't get any money off a litre.
Taken from Batley's Tesco prices up twice in 2 weeks before the coupon came out!

I am going to change to the Morrisons miles scheme for my fuel, the rewards are over double what tesco are going to offer if you use them in store, its the only way to hurt them.

Interesting comments re Morrisons petrol; worth investigating as Tesco here often charge more than other stores in this part of Scotland.

Our club cards vouchers arrive shortly.I believe they are only calculated until 23rd October.Therefore.although we are saving points now we will not be able to redeem them at 4x as the vouchers will not arrive until after 6th December. i.e. the vouchers we are about to receive only cover until October so all Nov points are only worth 3x

It seems every area of our lives will be affected by the forthcoming cuts. We have to vote with our feet. The consumer must realise the power they have.
