Sky's Home Call Costs to Set to Rise

From the 1st June Sky will become the latest provider to change the peak time hours for landline calls and increase their call charges.

Peak call period

With BT having already moved the start of their off-peak evening calls back an hour, it was only a matter of time before Sky followed suit and - from the 1st June - Sky's new peak hour rates will be charged from 7am to 7pm instead of the old 6am to 6pm.

This means that if you are currently signed-up on a free calls package, you will now have an hour's less time in the evening to make your free calls as only calls made after 7pm will be inclusive.

Talk Talk have also announced their intention to keep pace with the other providers by making the same change to their peak hours on the same date as Sky.

Virgin media are the only provider currently keeping their peak hours at 6am to 6pm, but this is tempered by the fact that their peak call charges currently come in at 6.5 per minute.

Daytime calls

Sky customers will also see a 12% increase in call charges for peak time rates. Daytime calls will now cost 5.90p per minute as opposed to the previous 5.25p.

The rise is in line with BT's recent price hike to the same figure for its daytime calls, but Talk Talk will come in slightly cheaper than both BT and Sky at 5.8p minute.

Call Set Up fee

Sky will also be increasing their one-off call set-up fees from 9p to 9.9p (again in line with BT's similar raise on 1st April). The cost of calling a mobile will also rise to 12.5p per minute in the daytime and 7.5p in the evening for customers with on the popular  'freetime' package.

Talk Talk customers will also see a similar rise in connection fees to 9.9p.
