200Mbps Home Broadband Moves Closer

Motorola has suggested that home broadband capable of speeds of 200Mbps is a step closer after Virgin Media chose the firm's termination system to power its new network.

Britons could soon be enjoying broadband capable of speeds of 200Mbps thanks to a linkup between Virgin Media and Motorola.

Virgin already offers the UK's fastest home broadband, with a 50Mbps package currently available, but has been testing a new network which uses the DOCSIS 3.0 standard. This will be four times quicker, according to the firm.

Motorola has now confirmed that Virgin will be using its CMTS solution to increase bandwidth on its network.

"We are delighted to be selected by Virgin Media as it rolls out DOCSIS 3.0 based services, and we look forward to working closely as we head towards the reality of the 200Mbps home," said Joe Cozzolino, senior vice president of Motorola's European home and networks mobility division.

Mr Cozzolino added that many telecoms operators across the globe are seeking to boost bandwidth capabilities and are using the Motorola technology.

However, even with Virgin Media's 50Mbps service the UK currently lags behind world broadband leaders such as South Korea. The government has also been accused of a lack of vision in its Digital Britain report which outlined plans for the future of British broadband.

The report revealed plans for universal broadband capable of speeds of at least 2Mbps, which is far too slow according to some commentators.
