Spurs Top 'Car Insurance Premier League'

The North Londoners might not have much to celebrate on the pitch - but their locale has come first for car insurance claims.

An official car insurance ranking of the Premier League has been revealed, in a tongue-in-cheek new report.

Churchill analysed claims data in the postcodes in which the 20 premiership football grounds of the 20 teams of the 2008/09 season were located. It found that those living in or near London N17 - home of Tottenham Hotspur's White Hart Lane ground - were the most likely to have lodged a recent car insurance claim.

The North Londoners were found to be 59 percent more likely to claim, compared to the average. By contrast, those in the WN5 district, home of Wigan Athletic, were least likely to claim at 11 percent less likely than average.

Overall, the balance of claims was skewed towards higher rather than lower likelihood - with 16 of the 20 areas above average in terms of claims numbers.

James Murray, spokesperson for Churchill car insurance, explained: "This is because traditionally, football stadiums have been built in inner city areas with high population densities. Areas with high population densities are more likely to experience car insurance claims, possibly more so on match days when the areas are crowded."

Unsurprisingly, actual league position was found to have little correlation to where the teams came on the car insurance table. Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion - 1st and 20th in the premiership respectively - came in only 4th and 15th in terms of claims numbers.
