DIY 'Needs Accidental Damage Cover'

Homeowners planning some DIY for the bank holiday weekend should make sure accidental damage cover is included in their home insurance policies, according to AA Insurance.

Britons who fancy doing up their home during the bank holiday weekend could end up having an expensive time, according to AA Insurance.

Research by the cover provider has found that more than a third of the UK intend to do some DIY this weekend. One in ten will find that they have a DIY accident, which could cost more than £100 to put right.

However, less than half of home contents insurance policyholders also have accidental damage, meaning any repairs they need to make will not be covered by their policy.

"Budding DIY-ers should check their cover before they get that tool box out. If necessary, accidental damage can be added to your policy," said the firm's Simon Douglas.

According to the AA, accidental damage is the largest source of home insurance claims. This can include water damage, collapsing shelves and paint-stained carpets.

"With 38 percent of people attempting to fix their accidental damages themselves, these are certainly some of the issues that may be faced this weekend," he added. AA Insurance recommended that people planning any work should go to their local DIY centre, which should provide leaflets offering guidance on their particular project.
