The Foreign Office is warning people travelling to next week's Champions League final in Rome to make sure they have travel insurance.
Football fans heading to Rome to watch Manchester United versus Barcelona in the final of the Champions League should make sure they have travel insurance, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) has warned.
The government department warned that many people may decide to travel to Rome at the last minute, furthering the possibility that they are not adequately covered. According to FCO figures, a fifth of Britons do not take out travel insurance and this figure sharply increases when they make spur-of-the-moment decisions to travel somewhere.
A statement from the department read: "The FCO is particularly worried that the current economic climate means that more fans will be cutting corners and will decide against taking out travel insurance. This could have potentially disastrous consequences for football travellers, as a fall in Rome resulting in a broken leg could cost up to £2,500 without insurance."
Manchester United will be looking to become the first team to retain the Champions League trophy, following their success over Chelsea in last year's final. It would be the fourth time that the team have been champions of Europe.
Barcelona, who knocked out Chelsea in the last round, are looking to be crowned champions for the third time.
