Thrill-seekers 'Must Inform Travel Insurer'

Holidaymakers planning activities such as wind tunnel flying or tree canopy walking should make sure they are covered by their travel insurance.

Travel insurance providers should be informed if people intend to undertake risky activities while on holiday, Axa has warned.

The firm has seen a sharp rise in the number of people taking on new pursuits when they travel. Axa has even had to rewrite policy documents in order to cover these new crazes.

These include Octopush - described as "underwater hockey" - Ringos - sliding down hills in large rubber rings - and Zorbing - rolling down a slope in a large ball. So many people want to walk the Sydney Harbour Bridge when they visit Australia that the firm has even had to write a special clause into its policy booklet.

"Swimming with dolphins is so last year - it's now all about bathing with elephants. And who wants to go canoeing when power boating is an option?" said John Dacey, lifestyle claims manager at AXA. "Whatever activities you're planning on your holiday, make sure you tell your insurer. Many will be included on a standard policy but it's always worth checking."

Mr Dacey added that buying travel insurance is as important as "checking they've tied the bungee rope to your foot before you jump", particularly for activities that could end in injury. Axa data shows that the average cost of medical claims is extremely high - particularly in the USA (£1,702) and Australia (£740).
