Brits 'Turning Back to Landlines'

Landlines could see a surge in usage as Britons attempt to reduce their telecoms spend in light of the recession, a new survey finds.

UK consumers plan to use their landlines more in an effort to save cash, according to new research from Booz & Company.

The firm found that Britons are planning to change their telecoms habits as the recession continues and fears over possible redundancies continue. More than four in ten said that they would be using their landline more often, while a quarter said that they would stop using their mobile phone.

Additionally, almost 45 percent responded that they will delay buying a new mobile while 43 percent suggested they would find a cheaper contract. A large proportion - 44 percent - said that they would try to use VoIP - phone calls which take place over the internet - more often.

In total, a quarter of British consumers have already started spending less on communication and media and another quarter plan to do so over the next six months.

"Operators need to not only review their product and service offerings in the short term but also think about their long-term strategy, as customers are becoming more savvy about the way they purchase and use services," said Michael Peterson, head of the company's UK CMT practice.
