Government Unveils Mobile Broadband Plans

The government has revealed a series of measures to ensure 99 percent of the UK population is able to receive mobile broadband.

Mobile broadband in the UK could be set to undergo large changes in order for firms to provide the technology to a wider area of the UK.

Government adviser Kip Meek has published his final report on the subject and suggests that the UK's five mobile broadband operators should have their licenses extended in definitely - as long as they pledge to provide 3G mobile broadband to the entire population.

This attempt will be boosted by the extra frequencies which will be made available when analogue television is turned off in three years time. The extra spectrum will be sold off to mobile broadband operators, enabling 99 percent of the UK population to be covered.

Mr Meek claimed that this move could also see the whole of the UK receive mobile broadband capable of speeds of 4Mbps - twice the amount laid out in communication minister Lord Carter's Digital Britain report.

"The UK would be at the forefront of commercially-deployed mobile technology around the world, delivering economic and social benefits that far outweigh the costs," he said.

Whether or not Mr Meek's proposals are accepted will be made clear when the final Digital Britain report is released. It is currently scheduled for June 16th.
