Virgin Media Eases Traffic Restrictions

UK's fastest broadband provider has upped daily download allowances.

Virgin Media has announced that it is raising the daily download allowances for its broadband customers.

The company currently offers the fastest broadband package in the UK - capable of speeds up to 50Mbps - but the changes affect its smaller 10Mbps (L) and 20Mbps (XL) deals. Previously, users on these packages could download 3.6GB and 7.4GB respectively - these totals have now been raised to 4.5GB and 10.5GB.

However, the exact allowance available depends on the time of day that the internet is being used. During morning peak times - between 10:00 and 15:00 - L subscribers will have 3GB to play with and XL subscribers will have 7GB, while in the evening peak times - between 16:00 and 21:00 - they will have 1.5GB and 3.5GB respectively.

Subscribers to the 50Mbps continue to have an unlimited download allowance.

Traffic management is used to stop frequent downloaders from slowing the network for others. The new limits are part of the DOCSIS 3.0 standard which Virgin Media has adopted.

"Today's changes just go to highlight how the major investment in our new DOCSIS 3.0 network is enabling all Virgin Media customers to enjoy the best of today's web, whether viewing full-screen HD video on a PC or unlimited downloads," said Virgin Media Broadband executive director Jon James.
