Barclaycard Welcomes Contactless Boots Trial

Barclaycard calls contactless credit cards 'the future' as Boots reveals plans to trial the technology.

RBS and MasterCard are to trial contactless payment systems at Boots - and Barclaycard has welcomed the news.

Barclaycard already provides contactless debit and credit cards to its customers and the firm's managing director of UK cards, Amer Sajed, said the technology is "the future of payments". Contactless cards allow users to simply swipe cards to make a payment, rather than having to insert them into a machine.

The firm currently has nearly two million contactless credit card customers and half a million contactless debit cards.

Barclaycard has also conducted research which found that 98 percent of contactless cardholders find the system easy to use and 88 percent say that it saves them time. He continued: "Consumer feedback highlights the increasing demand for contactless payments and we hope other retailers will follow Boots and introduce contactless payment facilities in store in our continuing aim to achieve a contactless Britain."

Some commentators have suggested that contactless systems will make fraud easier, but payments association Apacs has assured users that any purchases made over £10 require a pin to be entered, stopping large amounts of money from being stolen.

Cardholders are liable for up to £50 if a card is used before it is reported lost.
