Entertaining At Home 'Costs £1.5bn a Year'

New research has suggested that Britons who entertain at home to save money could be losing £1.5 billion a year through 'mishaps'.

Trying to save money by staying in instead of going out could actually be costing Britons large amounts of money, according to AA Insurance.

The firm conducted a study which found that almost half of the UK's population are ordering takeaways or cooking themselves, rather than going out to restaurants. However, nine out of ten homeowners involved in the survey said that they have had "culinary mishaps" when entertaining at home, costing an average of £100 each year.

AA Insurance found that the most frequent accidents were china and glass breakages, with just over half experiencing this mishap, followed by food stains and red wine spills. A quarter had suffered a cooking accident, such as a small fire.

However, the study also revealed that many households do not have adequate home insurance if an accident occurs.

"Only five percent of those surveyed found their home disaster justified an insurance claim for accidental damage and many would have been unable to claim anyway, as less than half of home contents policyholders have an accidental damage extension to their contents policy," said AA Insurance director Simon Douglas.

"I'm also concerned that an estimated third of homes have no contents cover at all and some families are considering letting their insurance cover lapse to save money - but that could cost them dear in the long term."
