New research from Sainsbury's Home Insurance reveals the cost of replacing items lost after a fire or other disaster.
The average British household has more than £45,000 worth of contents, according to new figures from Sainsbury's Home Insurance.
Analysts at the insurance provider examined loss adjusters' data and found that it would take £45,500 to replace the contents of an average home after a fire or similar disaster. The study also revealed which rooms in the home contained the most value.
Living rooms typically contained £10,000 in contents, amounting to more than a quarter of all of the home's items. The master bedroom contained the second largest amount of contents, amounting to £5,900 - or 17 percent of the total contents - with clothes, shoes and furniture accounting for much of the total.
Neil Laird, manager at Sainsbury's Home Insurance, said it was "staggering" how much the average home's contents added up to - and how much it would cost to replace them should the worst happen.
"It's therefore essential that you compare policies not only on price, but also on the level of cover they provide," he advised. "It's important to make sure you not only have sufficient sum insured cover but also accidental damage cover. Not all policies provide cover for soft furnishings, including carpets, as standard for example."
