Credit Card Security Fears 'Affecting Online Behaviour'

A new study has revealed that many Britons are still reluctant to buy goods online because of fears over the safety of their credit card details.

Many consumers are being put off internet shopping because they are worried about the security of their credit cards, according to new research.

A YouGov study, commissioned by online payments system ClickandBuy, discovered that a third of consumers do not regularly use online shopping. Of this group, more than half said that they were reluctant to do so because of concerns about credit card safety.

The research found that just four out of ten Britons were "totally confident" that no unscrupulous third parties would be able to see their credit card details when they are sent to an online retailer. ClickandBuy director of e-commerce operations Nick Drew suggested that consumers could be made to feel more at ease if there are a number of payment methods available.

"If just one payment option is offered, consumers may question the legitimacy of the website," he explained. "However, if several payment options are available, then it means that the website is likely to have been vetted and cleared by multiple payment companies."

The ClickandBuy study reflects the Unisys Security Index, published on April 20th, which revealed that 88 percent of consumers are concerned about their credit card or banking details being accessed by other people.
