Newly-married couples should make sure that gifts and other items bought for their wedding are covered by their home insurance, according to Direct Line.
Getting married can add a huge amount to the value of a home's contents - and insurance policies should reflect this, Direct Line has warned.
The insurance provider cited a study by Opinium Research, carried out in April, which revealed that guests at weddings spend an average of £79 on each gift - meaning a wedding with 50 guests could result in £3,950 worth of presents, while a larger 150-guest wedding would create £11,850 in items.
These figures could rise even higher, given that a small number of guests (three percent) reported that they would spend £500 or more on a single gift. Not being covered for these extra contents could be problematic in the event that the worst happens.
"The costs of the wedding dress, flowers, jewellery and outfits for the wedding party can easily run to many thousands of pounds, so it will be a shrewd newlywed who checks their insurance policy to make sure that all of their purchases and gifts are protected in the event of loss, damage, or theft," said Andrew Lowe, head of home insurance at Direct Line.
"People should make sure they are adequately covered by their home contents insurance policy, and should contact their insurer if they have any questions about their level of cover."
