Rich People 'Will Move Away Due to Tax Change'

Steeper income tax rates could lead to more people moving away, according to one currency specialist.

The Budget could cause further financial woes in future due to an exodus of high earners from the UK, it has been suggested.

Caxton FX, a foreign exchange house, said that there had been a "surge" in people applying to move their money abroad in the wake of last week's announcements from chancellor of the exchequer Alistair Darling. The firm also indicated that increased numbers of people were looking to move abroad before the next tax year begins.

Included in the Budget, unveiled by Mr Darling in parliament, were plans to raise income tax rates for people earning over £150,000 a year from 40p in the pound to 50p from next April. Tax relief on pension contributions from these high earners are also scheduled to be cut.

The tax moves come as the government battles to patch up huge holes in the public finances, widened by a general decline in taxpayer revenue due to the credit crunch and economic downturn. Mr Darling also said last week that the public debt would hit £175 billion this year - equivalent to more than 12 percent of total predicted annual economic output.

James Hickman, managing director of Caxton FX, said: "We have been inundated with enquiries from our clients ... some are simply looking to transfer capital overseas, some already are based part of the year out of the country and there are some with second homes in the UK who will suffer withdrawal of holiday let tax reliefs and as a result are thinking of selling up and buying property overseas.

"These people are not celebrities or high profile people who figure in the Rich Lists but simply clients with some capital worried about preserving their assets."

Caxton FX analysis also suggested that high earners in the UK would face a "real" tax rate of 60p in the pound from next year, once all the changes made in the Budget were factored in.
