Consumers Unable to Claim on Cancelled Mexico Trips

Holidaymakers may not be able to make a claim on their travel insurance if they decide not to go to Mexico in light of the swine flu outbreak.

Travellers heading to Mexico may be unable to claim any cancelled trips on their travel insurance, because the Foreign Office has not changed its advice level for the country.

Mexico has been hit by an outbreak of swine flu, which now appears to have spread to a number of other countries. However, while the Foreign Office has published guidelines for avoiding swine flu, it is not telling Britons to stay away from Mexico on its advice page.

This means that travel insurance holders may not be able to claim back the cost of a cancelled holiday. Conversely, if the Foreign Office advice does change and the department tells people not to travel to the country, holidaymakers may not be covered if they end up needing medical treatment as a result of falling ill.

Flights to Mexico are continuing for the time being, while the latest reports suggest that at least 100 people have died from the disease. The UN has warned that there is a possibility the virus could turn into a pandemic, while tests are being conducted on people who became ill after travelling to Mexico in the UK, Australia, Brazil, Israel and New Zealand.

There have also been reported cases in the USA and Canada.
