Consumers Making Mistakes About Travel Insurance

A survey conducted for the Department of Transport has found that many Britons are mistaken about what their travel insurance will cover.

Many holidaymakers are confused over what financial protection they have if their airline or travel operator goes out of business, new research has revealed.

According to the YouGov study, conducted for the Department of Transport, one in ten people wrongly believe that they will always be entitled to a flight home if they end up stranded on holiday. Additionally, nearly three in ten said that their travel insurance will cover them if they book directly with an airline - the Department of Transport warned that this is not always the case.

Transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick revealed that half of the people involved in the survey are planning a holiday in the next year and said the government wanted to ensure they have the right information. A government website has now been set up with information for air travellers.

"There are numerous types of financial protection available, so the launch of the 'holiday protection' information on Directgov aims to outline the facts and help you make the right decisions according to your travel plans," said Mr Fitzpatrick. "It's only very occasionally that holidays go wrong, but smart planning can make all the difference in helping you return home with minimal problems and expense."
