Holidaymakers 'Should Keep Credit Card Receipts'

The senior vice president of Visa Europe has issued guidance on how people can use debit and credit cards safely when abroad.

People should be careful when using debit and credit cards in foreign countries, according to the senior vice president of Visa Europe.

Fiona Wilkinson explained that consumers can help ensure that they do not fall victim to credit card fraud by following a number of steps.

"Always check the amount you've been asked to pay and keep your receipts so you can check the amount on your statement when you get back home," she said. "Never write down your PIN and try to keep different cards in separate places - that way you won't lose everything if something goes wrong."

Recent figures from UK payments association Apacs revealed that foreign credit card fraud is one of the growth areas of the problem.

Apacs research showed an increase in the losses accounted to card fraud last year. Despite this, the organisation suggested that the chip and PIN system has helped protect cardholders.

Apacs claimed that the rise in fraud is because of areas which are not protected by chip and PIN, such as transactions in countries which do not use the technology. Cardholders have also been asked to inform providers when they go on holiday so the use of their card abroad does not result in its cancellation.

First Direct told me there is no point telling them in advance that I'm travelling abroad - as their "fraud" detection systems don't take this into account and will block your card anyhow. I've had them do this *twice* so far this year: and it's extremely inconvenient when you are on the other side of the world!
