Motorists 'Will Come Out Against Speed Limit Cuts'

Over four in five drivers admit to having broken speed limits in the new Admiral poll.

A car insurer has suggested that drivers will be opposed to government plans to cut speed limits.

Admiral conducted a survey recently, showing that 65 percent of motorists are not in favour of cutting the limit to 20mph in residential streets - a move proposed by a new government road safety consultation launched today. Currently, the limit stands at 30mph.

A hard core of three percent even told Admiral that they would prefer an increase of the residential area speed limit to 40mph. Moreover, the insurer found that 83 percent of people admit to speeding in the past.

Collisions and other car accidents are generally less damaging to vehicles and cause fewer injuries if they are at a lower velocity. This means that, if the speed limit cuts are imposed, the car insurance industry could experience fewer claims being made.

Unveiling the proposals, road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick said: "By improving our roads, our vehicles and our behaviour on the roads, we aim to develop a road safety system in which mistakes on the road don't lead to death or serious injury. We propose do this through smarter working with local partners, not through creating large numbers of new offences and regulation."

Over 3,000 people die each year on Britain's roads.
