Holiday-at-Home Britons 'Not Buying Travel Insurance'

Millions of Britons are planning to holiday within the UK this year - but the majority intend to do so without any travel insurance, according to new research.

Holidaymakers have been warned that they should not forego travel insurance this year, even if they plan on staying within the UK.

New research by Liverpool Victoria has revealed that a quarter of the UK's adult population will holiday within Britain this year, with financial worries cited by five million people as the main reason for not going abroad. Most of this group said they could not afford to go abroad, while many also cited the poor exchange rate of the pound against currencies like the euro and the dollar.

However, the majority of people who said they would take a British holiday this year said that they would not be purchasing travel insurance for their trip. Liverpool Victoria spokesperson Emma Holyer warned that this could prove to be a bad decision.

"[Travel insurance] will help to ensure that they don't end up out of pocket if they have a problem with their transport arrangements, such as missing their train, plane or bus, or if their belongings go missing," she explained. "In addition, if customers have to cut short their holiday or cancel for any reason, insurance will mean they can claim back some of the costs."
