Road Rage Car Insurance Shortfalls Highlighted by Provider

Sainsbury's claimed that most policies do not contain provisions related to road rage attacks.

A potential problem inherent in many car insurance policies has been revealed by Sainsbury's Car Insurance in new research.

The provider said that a majority of cover policies currently on offer in the UK do not offer specific provisions for the policyholder falling victim to a road rage attack. This is despite statistics cited by Sainsbury's which show that 58 per cent of drivers have suffered from just such an incident over the past year alone.

A total of 330,000 drivers were found to have been physically assaulted during the road rage attacks. Sainsbury's said that the top three most common triggers for a road rage incident are tailgating, a car wrongly pulling out at a junction and changing lanes without indicating first.

Car jacking was also revealed to have been a big problem for UK drivers. A total of 265,000 people are thought to have suffered from such an incident - where a thief gains entry to their car while they are still inside - while another 262,000 said that they had fallen victim to an attempted carjacking which was unsuccessful.

Joanne Mallon, Sainsbury's Car Insurance manager, said: "A worrying number of motorists have unfortunately suffered from road rage or car jacking and the result can be both mentally and physically scarring for the victims. It's important that these victims aren't left high and dry."

There are around 30 million motorists in the UK - one in two of the total population.
