Even short weekend breaks should be covered by travel insurance, provider Saga has warned.
Travel insurance is a necessity no matter how long a holiday is planned to take, according to over-50s insurance specialist Saga.
According to the company's research, more than a quarter of British holidaymakers experience boredom on trips while one in ten get fed up after the first week.
Saga has attempted to address this trend by launching an online calculator which takes into account people's preferences and suggests their "ideal" length for a holiday. Contributing factors include the number of people on the trip and the type of holiday - whether a city break, beach trip or cultural excursion.
However, even if a person's perfect trip turns out to be just for a weekend it is still vital that they take out travel insurance, according to Saga chief executive Andrew Goodsell.
"Holidays should offer a much-needed escape from daily stresses and strains and choosing the right destination for the optimum length of time is the first step to getting the most enjoyment from your holiday," he said. "Whether you enjoy a short weekend break in the UK or a fortnight's holiday somewhere exotic, don't forget to take out travel insurance to remove the stress should an unforeseen event happen while you are away."
