UK Skiers 'Make 130,000 Travel Insurance Claims'

There were more than 130,000 skiing-related travel insurance claims sent to UK insurers last year, according to a new estimate.

More than 130,000 travel insurance claims were made by British skiers last year, highlighting the importance of having adequate cover, according to one insurer.

InsureandGo estimated that the cost of the claims totalled roughly £66 million. Around £61 million of this total - almost 89,000 claims - was healthcare-related, making it the biggest contributor to the claims.

Additionally, 30,000 claims - at a total of £3.1 million - asked for compensation as a result of missing a ski pack because of illness or injury. Ski packs refer to the cost of hiring ski instructors or enrolling in ski schools.

The average medical-related claim was £690, higher than the overall average of £491. Other claims involved lost, stolen or delayed luggage (more than 10,000), hiring equipment to replace these items (1,900) and flight cancellations (nearly 1,500).

"Our list shows that medical problems are by far the biggest risk when it comes to skiing holidays," said InsureandGo managing director Gary Lockett.

"Many of these are due to injuries caused on the slopes which can be very expensive to put right, especially if you are unable to take yourself off the mountain, underlining again just how vital it is for skiers and snowboarders to have adequate travel insurance."
