Kensington & Chelsea 'Safe As Houses'

A lack of flood risk help makes the London borough of Kensington & Chelsea one of the safest places to live in the UK.

Houses in the prestigious London borough of Kensington & Chelsea (K&C) are the safest in the whole of the UK, a new study has found.

Research carried out for Virgin Money Home Insurance's Safe as Houses study found that residents of this part of the capital currently have the least to worry about when it comes to criminal damage, burglary or flooding.

Joining K&C as the top ten safest home locations in the UK are Dudley in the West Midlands, as well as Brighton and Hove, Poole and Southend, while London's relative lack of flooding risk also helped boroughs such as Tower Hamlets, the City of Westminster and Wandsworth rank highly, despite crime levels in the city being higher than in many other places.

At the other end of the scale, Doncaster, Nottingham and Sheffield were found to be the least safe areas based on the above criteria, though Grant Bather, spokesman at Virgin Money warned that, wherever a house is located in the country, home insurance is always well-advised.

"In the current economic downturn it makes sense to save money by shopping around for insurance but not by cutting the quality of insurance," he said.

He added that householders can make their properties safer by taking steps such as improving burglar alarms and fitting locks.
