Regular trips to the vet can ensure that pet owners keep insurance premiums low, according to M&S Money.
Making sure a pet gets a regular health check is not only good for the animal's well-being - it could potentially reduce the owner's insurance premiums too.
According to M&S Money, the cost of treating certain conditions can spiral out of control if they are not dealt with early. For instance, a single treatment which lowers the chance of an animal catching fleas costs £4, but a trip to the vet to deal with a serious flea problem can cost up to £2,000.
A flea infestation can make an animal more susceptible to other diseases, including tapeworms. The fleas themselves can also cause an allergic reaction.
Judith Roberts, M&S Insurance Manager, said: "Responsible pet owners know that regular treatments can help to reduce the likelihood of their pets suffering from common conditions."
John Darlington, founder of Bestpet Pharmacy - which has a partnership with M&S Pet Insurance - added that having pet insurance is not enough without checkups. "Even if a pet is insured they need to be treated regularly to prevent suffering and avoid potential claims as well as possible premium increases," he said.
"Simple worming and flea treatment regimes can protect the pet from infestation. We are now approaching the high season for these ailments."
